Catskills is a new Brighton based label only a few releases deep, but they are putting quality releases out there. Not strictly Hip Hop the label has signed artists across a number of genres their previous releases being the Feature Cast 12" and the Kidda - Shoe Cash EP and this their third, Aldo Vanucci can really be described as acoustic semi folk / funk. The CD contains four mixes of the cover of the 80's cheesy rock track When I See You Smile. The first and original mix has a groove to the track has quite an old skool feel going back maybe as far as the 60's and Herbie Mann with the flutes and Hammond type organ sounds. Great shuffling drums are overplayed by a simple real bass line. The organ breakdown at the bridge also introduces some simple back and forth rhythmic scratching which brings the vibe into the modern day. The track's main thrust is that the singer feels that everything is all right when she sees the subject of the song. It is a love song and the lyrics are softly delivered, this isn't a soul singer bursting her lungs, it is more relaxing but almost as heartfelt.

Version two, the Hairy Diamond remix adds more of an acoustic folk feel with more of a guitar based backing with some slide work on the frets, but the vocals are more striped down to practically just, 'everything's all right'. The lowly mixed backing singers add a touch of a gospel vibe to this mix, the whole track building to a crescendo when all the instruments kick in and the pitch rises.

Tim Love Lee adds more of a Latin Dance vibe with a more up tempo feel and urgent hand clapping. After the intro for the verse most of the instrumentation is cut out until the chorus when an additional Ska bass line is added and the hand claps return. Most of the tacks end with an extended instrumental portion which either loops out or in the case of the Tim Love Lee remix takes on an additional Dub feel making this the longest version at roughly fie and a half minutes in duration.

The final mix by Jon Kennedy of Grand Central brings back more of an acoustic feel with minimalist accompaniment from initially just a guitar and as the bars pass increasing drums which eventually kick in full force with a really nice big crispy sound complete the mix. Gentle flutes add more to the mix, but it is really the drums that push this version along.

The whole project is engineered sweetly by Scott Whyte wit the song being written by Diane Warren. With EMI Music publishing and Vital distribution behind the label this product should be everywhere and hopefully promoted well. If you need a change fro hard beats and male angst, then you could switch up to the happy sentiments of Aldo Vanucci. The track has already been Ali B's Tune Of The Week and has enjoyed plays from Gilles and Rob on Radio 1.
