Three Sinister Syllables CD [Chopped Herring]

Bob Golf and those Chopped Herring dudes are back, this time with a full length CD full of funk breaks and snippets of some of the freshest samples out there. Many of these breaks have been harnessed to form some of the most popular Hip Hop hits of recent times, but here you have the raw essence distilled down to its base and flipped up by a group of complete nutters. Apparently this mix has been in production for an astonishing 2 years, but even so still sounds fresh. It is just about the full 74 minutes long and is a cut 'n paste job with an astounding 250+ breaks used. The chops between tracks come thick and fast and as my days of anal break details retention are long gone I'm not going to break down a list of them for you. But some of the artists who made these breaks famous once again include the likes of: Necro, Non Phixion, J Zone, Porn Theatre Ushers, Edan and Paul Barman amongst others. There is of course a whole heap of delectable newly discovered breaks which to my knowledge have not been used by anyone else yet. The overall mix flows well the general vibe being kept up all the way along. Interspersed with the music are copious vocal snippets from films and adverts and the like, some of them being quite obscure and absurd, others being immediately recognisable such as those from Lock Stock. At the beginning there are several golf related vocal samples relating of course to the CD creators name. I'm not sure where the name Three Sinister Syllables comes in except for the sample which uses the phrase right at the beginning. There may well be something behind this, just it has passed me by for the moment.

The CD I have only has a few ident points breaking the CD into roughly seven or eight minute segments. I guess this is in line with the way the CD was produced and put together, i.e. in disparate chunks. There's a sick 26 track MF Doom tribute section worth checking at index point 3. In fact it would be impossible to create such a fast moving mix live, even if you had four decks going. The Chopped Herring dudes don't just chop stuff up in the sequencer though, this is a Hip Hop CD after all and therefore they have to get busy on the decks as well. Fortunately they do not over do the cutting and scratching, but rather fill out the CD in the required places with some rhythmical cuts which aren't over technical.

To round up then, this is a strange take on a theme that has been done before. Because of the humour involved this CD is a bit different and of course everybody has dug out slightly different records so this has its own blend and style. I found myself adjusting the volume a fair bit at the beginning, but the mix seems to settle down later on. The only criticism is that perhaps that the beats die out too frequently and therefore the mix can have a bit of a start and stop nature. Never the less I give this high marks for both effort, ingenuity and listenability. Check it out if you can.
