You may not have noticed, but the Bristol based Hairy Parents label have been bobbing around for about five years now and have contributed their bit to the pushing cutting edge Hip Hop. Now utilising the knowledge they have gained combined with new enthusiasm they are ready to push on and have the release of Ian Beef's new LP lined up to do just that.

You may not have heard of Ian Beef before and this is because he is a producer who keeps on the DL. He has also been known to change his moniker which doesn't help in identification, but this LP should drop you in on where he is at at the moment. This LP is what he has been working up to all this time and his press states that this is 'rap in an exaggerated form - challenging what you perceive as Hip Hop'. The many chapters of his life are encapsulated here, observations on a genre he loves and at the same time embraces the best and worst clichés of the genre.

In order for the project to come to fruition, Ian Beef has teamed up with label mate and long time friend Majesta who has in the past released stuff with All Creatures, DJ Format and Parlour Talk. He has been enlisted to convey Ian's lyrical whims, but he has the adept ability to still sound convincing regardless.

The CD gets going with the first single Spitroast which has been described as some sort of Love story, but is rather a depraved tale of sexual perversions and obscenities. With its excellent funky beat and organ samples this is on a more of an up-tempo party track type vibe which also features Deed as well as Majesta dropping their jokes on the mic. Lyrics convey humour and are delivered with dexterity, just leaving DJ Fine Styler to finish it off with the cuts and vocal snippet drops.

Live At The Amphitheatre brings a fantastic old skool vibe as the crew bring back and cut up the classic break from Wild Style and conjure images of the big final gig from the film via their vocal harmonising and quick switching backwards and forwards between the voices and add to the insanity with a particularly mental chorus. This track has a great deal of energy, keeps running along and is probably a good example of where the group are coming from.

This CD ends with a seven minute mixed promotional album sampler which certainly makes the LP sound dope as buggery and something which if you are after jumping up and having a laugh should be right up your street. There is a big old skool influence going on here and Ian brings back some of that fun element that has been pushed out by all the recent blinging. This is down to earth homegrown funky comedic rap which still retains high production values and retains a definite listenability. There is bits of Public Enemy, Digital Underground and a wealth of other sounds across a variety of tempos all of which sounds well produced and something to make a mental note to look out for in the future.

Selected tracks off the album also feature Spye and the Meat Fam with selected tracks to look out for including: the gangsta rap parody of Oxy Moron or the end peice Where My Geese At? These guys are trying hard to not be just another comical South West collective and demonstrate a bigger and broader mindset.
