An exclusive chance to see the "striking"
(The Times) and "compelling" (The Independent) documentary by director and
photographer David LaChapelle on the big screen.
To kick off the Sadler's Wells international festival of Hip Hop dance
theatre, Breakin' Convention, Channel 4 along with Dark Fibre will be
screening David LaChapell's compelling Clowns in the Hood, the film
that took Sundance by storm earning it an Honourable Mention by the Short
Film Jury. The film will be screened at Sadler's Wells theatre, Roseberry
Ave, London EC1 on Thursday 13th May at 19.30 followed by a Q&A with Tommy
the Clown, the man who brought Clowning to the world.
With a frenetic soundtrack composed for the film, Clowns in the Hood is a
raw and energetic documentary that chronicles the latest Hip Hop dance
phenomenon called Clowning as it emerges from the depths of gangland
Compton, LA. Beautifully shot, it demonstrates the vibrant, urgent and
colourful style that LaChapelle is famous for.
Combining Hip Hop, tribal dance and stripper moves, and involving outrageous
face paint, clowning events are totally unique, described by the kids as
'ghetto ballet'. The film also explores a more creatively combative form of
the dance called Krumping, providing the dancers with a positive mode of
competition that keeps them off the streets.
"These
kids dance because their lives depend on it. "If I hadn't started dancing"
says one, "I'd probably be dead"' (The Times)
This is an exciting and exclusive opportunity to hear about the birth of
Clowning and Krumping, discover some moves, and meet the man who started it
all.
Tickets are £6.00 each and available at the Sadler's Wells box office on
0870 737 7737 and also online at

Following this the International Festival of Hip Hop Dance Theatre continues
with two full days of events over the weekend of the 15-16th May 2004. There
will be several Festival Workshops and the Breakin' Convention festival
organisers are offering you the opportunity to take part in workshops with
four top Hip Hop dance pioneers:

right through to the clowning craze spreading through USA today, if you want
to be a dancer you don't want to miss out on these fantastic events.
All workshops are £10.00 (£6.00 concessions) and take place in the Lilian
Baylis Theatre, at Sadler's Wells. They will however only be available to
Breakin' Convention ticket holders. Then the programme continues starting in
the early evenings with events spread across Saddler's Wells' three venues.
