deejay feature 0032 added 27.06.06 words Tony Camara technical: QED
Tony Camara caught up with DJ Rasp from St Helens, Merseyside, the Leeds regional DMC heat winner 2006, just after he had collected his prizes for a quick Northern connection in action - representing in the north West… UKHH: How does it feel to go through just now? DJ Rasp: Ah man unbelievable, I’ve been doing this since 98 and I never expected it tonight like, yeah man I’m over the moon.UKHH: So you've been putting in a year’s hard work then? DJ Rasp: I've been working on routines for like over a year now, just swapping and changing them like. I got some records pressed up using The Carvery, yeah man I was impressed by the pressings and that like and try and make my own set, rather than use other peoples records, try and produce it like. UKHH: So you put in all the work, diggin... DJ Rasp: Yeah and it through Pro Tools and pressing them and that like, luckily I had a few copies pressed up and it worked out better like that. I used some originals and some that I pressed up myself like. UKHH: What was you most impressed about in your set? DJ Rasp: You know what, it went so fast I just enjoyed it, I was a bit nervous before and I though fuck it, just get up there an have a good time an' just fed off the crowd, vibes and all the DJs that were on tonight. It was a really good standard tonight like. I was shocked when he read out my name then you know what I mean. “...I was a bit nervous before and I though fuck it, just get up there an have a good time...” UKHH: Who did you think was going to win it? DJ Rasp: Fast T myself, he did a wicked set using all the old 80's breaks an all that like, yeah man he was good.UKHH: So it was a proper surprise then hearing your name read out? DJ Rasp: Yeah, defo man, although I entered the Liverpool one and I had needle problems and that like, and I wasn't happy with my set at all, ya know what I mean. I though I’ll come to Leeds just have a good time you know what I mean, don't get too nervous or anything, just enjoy and ride with it like you know what I mean. UKHH: And that worked for you then? DJ Rasp: Yeah, yeah, just ride on the vibe and have a buzz man, you know what I mean, ah man I’m over the moon. UKHH: Do you think you got what it takes to deal with London? DJ Rasp: I'll just do my best man, you know what I mean, go down London have a buzz and see how it goes, you know what I mean. It’s been a wicked night, really good crowd, and these guys on now C2C are just totally inspirational man, I’ve never seen anything like it. I've seen them on DVDs but to see them live is totally mind blowin’. UKHH: Yeah they are amazing. It takes 'something' to be able to stand up there and do your thing. DJ Rasp: People spend all their life in the bedroom just for 6minutes. 6 minutes you know what I mean, all down to that like. It’s not an easy thing you know what I mean, it was a good night man, all in all, and a good club as well man. “...I've been battling every year since 98...” UKHH: Good club, good sound system. DJ Rasp: Definitely man, it run smoothly, I went to the Liverpool one and it didn't run smoothly like there was a lot of stops and starts but tonight it was good hip hop night, good PAs. I've been after getting into the UK finals for a while like. I got into the ITF UK finals last year and I thought OK I can give it my best shot and just try my hardest.UKHH: So how many times have you entered competitions? DJ Rasp: I've been battling every year since 98, The DMC. I entered the ITF for the first time last year, I got through to the UK finals. I got into the semis at the M.E.N. Arena but its a different battle its more like a one on one because its a hard thing to judge with the solos, you know, every one doing their 6 minutes, its a matter of preference. With the ITF it’s either Number 1 DJ won or Number 2. It’s like an MC battle or breakin' battle like it’s more a hip hop thing you know what I mean. UKHH: It's a straight knockout init? Winner goes through. DJ Rasp: With this it’s hard to come up against a guy and every ones got their own different personalities and their own different routines it’s hard to like, you know what I mean, to judge. You've just got to come through and do your thing. UKHH: What did you think of the 12 year old, DJ Metrodome? DJ Rasp: I thought he was good, I was shocked he didn't get through. I thought that 8 people should have got through, I was a bit surprised they only let 6 through. People travelled a long way and that like, it should have been 8. It can be a mad competition sometimes, but yeah man the standard was really high today, even all the waiting in the afternoon and everyone there got up and did their thing you know what I mean. I take my hat off to them. “...just go out here and show people what you do in your bedroom, show it to the world...” UKHH: And don't make mistakes. DJ Rasp: Ah yeah man, yeah it’s not an easy thing with loads of people looking at ya, but you've just gotta ride with it, just enjoy it, just have a buzz, you know what I mean, just do what you do, it like playing a song in it, you know what I mean, don't think of it like a competition, just go out here and show people what you do in your bedroom, show it to the world or whatever, you know what I mean.UKHH: Any big up's? DJ Rasp: yeah, big up my crew called Shakti, it's a hip hop crew, Philly Wiz, Mack of all Trades, Ashlarr. A couple in Manchester, G-Cut,Cut Above the Rest, Assmatics, Herb Adams, Broke'n'English. - Tony Camara & Delbwoy
