BRAINTAX BRINGS US THE FUNK !

You might think to yourself, 10 years is a hell of a long time to wait for an album, but look back at the list of releases Low Life have brought us over the last 10 years and I think you’ll agree that Braintax has given us more than enough to keep us happy.  10 years on though, and here it is, 14 full length tracks with mad variety, both Lyrically and Musically, guests that represent the cream the of UK Hip Hop’s inner circle and no meaningless filler or skits.

Ladies and gents, Braintax presents……….’BIRO FUNK’ (Release date 19 November 2001)

BraintaxBiro Funk represents the new confidence in homegrown Hip Hop; character, accent, outlook and sentiment all shine through with an unflinching Braintax twist.  The LP’s intro is one half of the current single ‘Don’t Drag Me In !’ and offers a taste of the Low Life live set with Braintax and DJ Harry Love on the turntables.  ‘Opening Titles’ then pulls us out of the traffic with a jolt….everyone knows Skinnyman and he features here as Braintax breaks down the Low Life set up over a Harry Love beat.  ‘Futureghost’ opens us up to a moodier Braintax sound, strings resonate as the story unfolds and Blade Runner meets Day of the Triffids.  ‘Godnose’ is exactly that, Task Force and Brains kick it up over a Farma g produced beat, this track will not be released as a single, though everyone will wish it was.  ‘Last Date’ and ‘Speak Your Mind’ follow with 2 personal takes on the wonderful world of relationships – complete with real arguments – over melodic head-noddable beats.  Then, a man known more for his hit-work with Jamelia and The Beta Band Colin Emmanuel aka C – Swing  - provides a track for Braintax to go off one one, skatty rhymes and smooth funkdafied ish.  And just when it got nice, they take you back to the moodiness of ‘Cobblestones’, previously supplied to Stonegroove/Rumour for Raw Materials vol. 1 this is battle rap with a few home truths for the Hip Hop scene.  When ‘The Grip’ kicks in (Beats courtesy of Jehst) we get a passionate delivered take on the way we live, an unintentionally stark reminder of what’s been happening around the globe…for centuries.  To the introspective side of rap JoeyBrains adds fantasy and imagery, ‘Peace’ sees the man fishing on a French country estate with his Brazilian mate, ‘Oceans’ sees him sitting on a cliff by a lighthouse smoking a spliff with his yet unborn son.  For those who missed last year’s single ‘Escuchame’ here it is again, retouched, but still maintaining the rich depth of the original, Bengrymm is on the beats.  And if you’re not in sensory overload by now, peoples favourite Jehst crops up to join Braintax on ‘Riviera Hustle’ which is a dirty rotten Scoundrels meet The Pink Panther with a maddening latin backing.  Then, to close, we get the most personal track on the LP, life in London circa 2001 ‘Exit’ is produced by Benny Live-o and epitomises the feel of Biro Funk, different, varied, twisted, never generic and, as always, very relative.

An album we’ve been waiting for?….I think so !

All that’s left to do know is go out and buy it, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
