Bringing home the dead
You know those times in the day where your train of thought meanders into a murky pool of darkness, and odd lyrics pop into your head; for days, weeks, months even, until something more relevant comes along to fill the void? Maybe you don't but right now there's two particular notions, little itches in my skull, incessantly triggered into action by the events around us.

The first is 'Fuck A War', an album cut from the Geto Boys 'We Can't Be Stopped', released around the time of the first trip into Iraq and just as relevant now as it was then. The Geto Boys contribution to the rap game has been seriously under-rated. And there's something disturbing but quite satisfying about a dwarf telling the most powerful bloke in the world he's wrong; and to go fuck himself in the process. Whereas right now the hot shit with the most sales is apparently some cod-history lesson over 'Impeach the President' that KRS already flexed plenty of times, and an over-hyped Casio album from the biggest homo-thug in the world…ever. I'm talking way beyond the Norton-esque religious self-indulgence achieved by DMX. This mo-fo is like the T-3000 model of homo-thug ear candy; the homo-thug prototype of the future: 2Pac has a lot to answer for.

A lot of people reached for the sniper rifles at the time but maybe Q-Tip's lament on the death of Hip-Hop was justified to a certain extent. While I'm at it let me just say that 8 Mile was shit too, especially the freestyle cyphers which were cheesier than an unwashed bell-end, coated in Brie, then used to stir a vat of steaming cheese sauce; in the middle of the world's biggest cheese manufacturer's biggest cheese factory; somewhere slightly to the east of Cheddar Gorge. Give it ten years and you'll look back on it with the same stage-show scorn afforded to the more cringe worthy sections of Wildstyle et al.

Burnt out vehicle However, it was quite a laugh watching the Cineplex full of squeaky under-age fuckwits squirm with unease at the potency of 'Shook Ones Pt. 2' as they settled down with their mobiles for the hour and a half of John Wayne 'walk into the sunset' bullshit we were all about to endure.

Anyway, enough of the cluuurb shit and meandering rants and let's get down to business. I was in a pub the other afternoon and on the TV was Sky News and I could hardly believe my eyes. In the corner of the screen was a 'little red button' with WAR embossed in the design. Now what is that all about? Do you get 'scud-cam' where you tailor the camera angle of mass destruction to suit your own particular needs? Or perhaps you can catch up on those civilian murders you missed while you were watching Eastenders? How about bang up to date match stats, highlights from previous tussles or a special 'own goal-cam' where you get to see your favourite blue-on-blue casualties: next update to include exclusive footage of high profile journalists needlessly slaughtered, not available to any other channel! It's become a replacement for the World Cup; an opportunity to release the sickening stench of reasoned hatred and greed for power.

Across the nation the slackest jaws debate the various intricacies and finer points of international law in an attempt to justify their own ends and prejudices. In basic terms the Right love the war because of their close links with this American administration and as a way of investing a relatively small amount of funds, manpower and lives for a huge stake in the world's biggest stock of natural resources. As I write this G-Dub has asked for 71 billion dollars to fund this operation. Now I'm no economist but surely that's enough to wipe out a huge chunk of world debt; that's crazy simplistic and idealistic but surely it's a more forward thinking concept than investing tax payers money by producing things like the typically arrogant sounding 'Mother of All Bombs'. If I paid taxes I'd be absolutely furious that I was contributing to satisfying the lust of these Donald Rumsfeld, four-eyed, side-parting lizards. I don't, but I can't help feeling fury at their barely hidden contempt towards the sheep they control. Unfortunately, before too long they'll be running a global paddock. If it's not obvious from their actions, it must be crystal clear from the amounts involved that this is a nation unwilling to even consider second place.

Desert Storm And the Left are just as blinkered. All the European darlings have come out with vicious onslaughts towards the generally good-thinking American public, using this evil administration as an excuse to whip out the pro-French, pro-Euro rhetoric that was taking a battering prior to this whole anti-terrorist debacle. Yeah, remember back that far? It was only a few months ago. Worst of all, they're more than happy to nurture the more extreme groups in this country just to add more weight to their argument. Anyone that went on the march will testify that not all the factions there believed in pursuing a peaceful resolution, happy to ride the wave of emotion for their own selfish needs.

What has happened to the capacity for individuals to see situations from a position beyond their own biased perspective?

I suppose when the stakes are this high you can't expect anything else. A supposedly civilised race reduced to red corner/blue corner tactics. With so much propaganda and (not so) subtle psychological techniques flying round it's best to believe nobody. If opinion polls are accurate (sorry had to pause because I made myself laugh) then more than half the population are supporting the war efforts, swayed by reports of helicopters shot down (by stupid Americans of course!) and casualties on the ground.

What's wrong with you? Don't you know your own minds? You must have realised it would come to this, and now because of some 'Candle in the Wind' style sentimental bullshit you've been fed, you're changing your mind and getting behind 'The Boys'. Where are your fucking principles! Anyone who willingly goes to attack another nation knows the risks, and as such must be willing to pay the consequences. I feel sorry for your family's loss but that's it. Call me a coward, whatever, but I don't fight anyone's wars apart from my own- and that's the modern way right?

Troops In Iraq This war could be the beginning of the end of what has been building up in the Middle East since 1945, bringing a sense of stability to the world unseen by previous generations: or it could just be the beginning of the end.

And the second sample that's been looped up by my brain's battered internal walkman? You thought I forgot right? Nah, I'll just save that little piece of disclosure for another time.
