It certainly takes a lot to impress a tired old cynic like me but Metrodome, a 12 year-old
DJ from Manchester playing at Sketch City, a monthly event held at the Contact
Theatre, certainly proved he was well up to the challenge with an awesome hour-long
set.
Sketch City is an interactive night aiming to showcase local talent with some of Manchesters'
finest and up-and-coming graffiti artists, illustrators, DJ's and MC's turning up to showcase their
talents. Anyone attending is also actively encouraged to get involved with art equipment and a
variety of surfaces made available for wannabe doodlers (contact Sketch City via
myspace.com/sketchcity for future events).
Metrodome (myspace.com/meterodomestics) has been DJ'ing since 2002 and has previously
held a number of nights in Manchester at Dry and Walkabout. At the grand old age of 12 he is
now a seasoned veteran of the DJ circuit, he held his first gig was when he was a mere 8 years
old and now has his own studio, working with the likes of Skinny Man, Rahzel and Andy Peek!
Tonight, playing against a colourful backdrop of jobbing graffiti artists he certainly caught me
off guard with a delicious play-list, dazzling the assembled masses with tunes from the Sugarhill
Gang to the Beastie Boys, all seamlessly mixed together with a healthy dose of scratching
thrown in to boot. All in all it made for a fantastically chilled Sunday night, the perfect antidote
to a hectic weekend and a great pick-me-up for the horrors of the coming week; great beats,
great company and beautiful artwork.
With talent like Metrodome at the helm the future of the great British DJ looks assured.
Keep an eye on this fella, you won't regret it
