 Train Trax Journeys in Music

Avalanches DJ Dexter and Fingathing Rip It Up in North-East Train Stations
article 056 added 10.11.02 words Riz

Train Stations are romantic buildings - look past the pigeons, long faces and even longer waiting times to see the sentimental backdrop made up of lovers parting, families re-uniting.

They are noisy places - a cacophony of train announcements, screeching rails and people's conversation amplified by the acoustics the buildings dimensions impose.

Listen hard then to hear Dexter from The Avalanches and Fingathing make their blend with this.

Broken beats, skewed melodies and supercharged scratches will be competing for sound space in two train stations across the North East in November. On Saturday 23rd November, Fingathing will be playing at Durham Train Station while on Saturday 30th November in Newcastle's Central Station, Dexter of The Avalanches goes to work on the decks as part of a new project led by Generator, popular music development agency for the North.

In this one-off extraordinary event, Dexter and Fingathing will do what they do best and confound all with their musical dexterity and light-fingered skill as part of a commission by Generator to challenge people's perceptions about contemporary music.

The project aims to take the DJ out of the club space and reintroduce the music into unconventional environments. Dexter and Fingathing will provide an exclusive soundtrack to all the journeys which run through Central Station on these dates ensuring that passengers will have a trip to remember.

They will be joined by local up and coming DJ's who will get the chance to showcase their talent alongside these turntable wizards.

These FREE events will take place between 13.30 - 16.00pm with guest slots beginning at 14.30pm.

This is an ENCORE project funded by Northern Arts as a follow-up to the 'Year of the Artist' initiative. It follows the success of a similar project run in February 2002, 'Mixing Down the Mall' which saw the Scratch Perverts and other national DJ's cut it up in shopping precincts across the North.

According to Grandmaster Flash, the original crusader on the vinyl frontier, Dexter is the most 'creative and original DJ in the world.' Three times undefeated Australian DMC champion, he is currently a member of The Avalanches who released their debut album 'Since I left You' in Australia in November 2000 to unanimous acclaim.

Generator is inviting DJ's to send in tapes for the 'unmissable' opportunity to play alongside these high profile guests. 6 lucky DJ's will be invited to participate in turntable workshops hosted by Urban Music Training 5 days prior to the main events.

Generator's Project Manager, Jim Mawdsley comments:

'Many people are mystified by the rise of the DJ and club culture: we are offering people who wouldn't normally experience live DJing the chance to see the skill involved in this most current of art forms.'

Since I left you, is an album brimming with spontaneity, joy, sadness, humour and reflection. Dexter is instrumental in giving the album this massive sound which makes him the perfect DJ to give the train station its atmospheric narrative.

Fingathing is made up of Peter Parker and Sneaky - these hip-hop 'superheroes' combine mastery of the decks and double bass to deliver a unique sound that is not to be missed.

The funding for this project comes from Northern Arts' "Year of the Artist" scheme.
