Physical Jerks - Last years winners So after last years barn storming event, you thought Wales was resting on its Hip Hop laurels? The vast majority of commuters and holiday makers driving past Newport via the M4 are unlikely to be aware that BBoyWales Chairman Dennis Mackenzie and Wales’ die hard BBoys and BGirls have been home brewing yet another event full of break dancing madness!

The overwhelming majority who attended in 2005 not only enjoyed themselves, but also begged the organisers to give it another go the following year. For all I knew the idea had been hit on the head until in February this year, a friendly arm thrust a flyer in my hand after the BBoy show ‘Rumble’ came down to Cardiff Bay. Lo and behold, the organisers not only looked like they were giving it another go, but they had already finalised a load of fine detail and printed some frisky fliers! Ever since then much anticipation and excitement has not only begun to build in Wales, but the UK scene as a whole. As with last years events, numerous preliminary events / teasers have taken place and Newport’s dedicated street teams have swept across Wales, Bristol and the West pulling out all the stops.

The 2006 battle line-up features a whole host of determined crews from all over the UK and overseas transcending social and cultural boundaries. Look out for bboys from Leeds, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, London, Derby, and as far away as Ireland, Scotland, Holland and Turkey. If that little run down did not have you rushing for the lino, then showcases featuring Bellatrix the UK’s #1 female beat boxer, and Cardiff’s award winning hip hop duo Keltech & Johnny B performing their latest single ‘Dream Weaver’, will be more than enough to satisfy your taste buds. Spinking’s Cico, world record holder for the most one handed hand-spins (yes one handed), will be flying in all the way from Italy to not only judge the event but to give you a taste of breaking at its very best.

This year will be hosted by Bristol's 'bboy man of comedy', Stepchild, along with Dregz & Kaptin, promoters from Wales’ well-respected and loved urban night ‘Higher Learning’; thrown in with some of the UK's top hip hop, funk and breaks DJs. With the defending champions Physical Jerks of Bristol looking to once again dominate the Bboy scene Wales has two of its own crews, The Uprock Addicts and H2O, representing the flag and declaring war on all who stand in their way.

So whether or not you are a rookie looking to get that first taste of live breaking or if you are an elbow-tracking veteran, the Welsh Open BBoy Championships 2006 will provide you with more than what you are looking for. Described by organisers as a 'hip hop extravaganza', this year’s champs is intended to attract more new and aspiring talent not only to the Welsh scene, but the UK as a whole, with Wales the driving force behind it.

Make this the perfect opportunity to come on down and be a part of what promises to be an unforgettable experience in the Welsh Hip Hop Calendar and at a remarkable price.
