This
year will see the UK host the first ever World B-Boy Championships at
Wembley Arena, on the 7th and 8th of February. In advance of this
‘Just Fabulous’, the company responsible for putting the event together,
organised a launch party to get the word out and give people a taste of
what to expect. Hosted by the one and only Tim Westwood, and featuring
crews from France and Spain (the UK crews were otherwise engaged) as
well as the one and only Crazy Legs (who unfortunately didn’t break) the
night was a great introduction for what is shaping up to be a massive
event for breakers and hip-hop heads worldwide.
The competition will feature over 100 competing breakers from all over
the world including crews from New Zealand, USA, South Africa, India,
France, Japan, Korea, the UK and more. This is the first time that such
an event has been organised and put together and what is more it will
feature the largest prize ever given for such an event: $100,000! (the
biggest cash prize for any Hip-Hop related event I can think of).
The competition will be in an elimination format with an expert panel of
judges made up of industry experts and respected crews. The panel will
also represent the wide range of countries represented by being fully
international. Following the World champs, Just Fabulous will also
organise national B-Boy events with a total prize money culminating at
$2.4 Million, which is good news for breakers all over the world.
In addition to all this, the event will be hosted by
everyone’s favourite southern chicken eater Ludacris, and will have
performances by the Clipse, Kela, Pharoahe Monch, Jungle Brothers and
back in the UK after 20 years, the one and only legendary story teller
Slick Rick! This all-star line up should make for a very entertaining
two days of B-Boying and hip-hop action.
Finally the event itself will be filmed with the footage to be
incorporated into a 12 part mini series, put together by Just Fabulous,
that will look at the B-Boy scene worldwide, as well as delving into the
personal lives and day to day activities of the crews representing at
the event. The series will also be backed up by a music compilation
released later on in the year, including Just Fabulous artists Kaya and
J.A.Y, who have worked with the Clipse and producer Killaloops.
On the night itself we had the chance to witness some
amazing skills from the crews that were present, with some fine B-Boying
action which got everyone quite excited as to the quality that will be
on show at the event itself. Tim was on form as usual, spinning club
anthems and some old skool B-Boy favourites for the breakers to show
their stuff.
