Oh
my gosh, has it really been ten years…dam I remember the 1st event that
took place @ The Shepherds Bush Empire, and considering I’ve been every
year since, I don’t need to tell you what I think of the Play Station 2
B’Boy Championships, from standing there in amazement (and envy) at the
groundbreaking and gravity defying moves, to trying to fight my way onto
the stage for any of the impromptu “open mic” sessions there has been,
and then to finally getting the chance to take some pics and meet some
of the B’Boys/Girls themselves (thanks JCPR).
Any ways enough of my waffle, next weekend (Oct 8th – 9th) see’s host to
the 10th anniversary of the now World Famous Play Station 2 B’Boy
Championships 2005 and as per normal, I think the best way for me to
get your interest/attention is to let you read the official press
release from the organisers themselves.
The PlayStation 2 B’Boy Championships is celebrating its 10th
anniversary this October at London’s Brixton Academy. The two-day
winner-takes-all event will feature the World’s greatest B’Boy crews and
solo B’Boys battling to become the ultimate champions.
Launched in 1995 at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire, hosted by hip hop
icon Crazy Legs and featuring a live performance by Philly’s finest
Schooly D the PS2 B’Boy Championships aimed to put the spotlight on a
popular but misrepresented sub-culture in the UK.
By working with the most credible names in hip hop over the past decade
including Rahzel (The Roots), Rock Steady Crew, Afrika Bambaataa, Melle
Mel, Roots Manuva etc and understanding the emotional psyche behind BBoy
culture, the PS2 BBoy Championships helped transform the UK‘s perception
of a little known imported inner city American art-form. It has helped
propel the art of breaking into the media lime light and facilitated the
building of BBoy culture into one of the most recognisable youth
movements in the World. Hip-hop icons Crazy Legs and Afrika Islam will
host this year’s 10th Anniversary event.
Crazy Legs founded the infamous NYC BBoy outfit the Rock Steady Crew and
is known the world over as a hip-hop pioneer who revolutionised
breakdancing. He played a key part in evolving the art-form into a style
that is recognised worldwide and used regularly in a multitude of
mainstream media including music videos, advertising and films. He also
starred in cult films Style Wars and Flashdance.
Afrika Islam, alongside Ice T is widely credited with introducing the
world to gangsta rap. He produced Ice T’s first four albums,
transforming a little know Californian based rapper into one of the
World’s biggest recording artists. He also won an Oscar for his
songwriting on the 1988 film Colours starring Sean Penn and Dennis
Hopper, and two Grammy Awards for his songwriting with Herbie Hancock
and Quincy Jones on the films Rockin It and Back On The Block
respectively.
The PS2 BBoy Championships is the UK’s most successful and biggest BBoy
contest, attracting capacity crowds of over 10,000 people every year. In
2005 the event will be made up of seven BBoy disciplines including the
breath-taking World Crew title featuring crews from USA, Korea,
Japan, Germany, France, Finland, Australia and UK; The extraordinary
Solo BBoy battle; The remarkable Beat Box battle, featuring
Anointed S (USA) Vs Battle faith-SFX (UK); The fantastically visual
Solo Popping Battle; a DJ Combat showcase providing technical
wizardry from turntable masters the Extended Players; the 2 on 2
Locking showdown and the Solo BBoy Battle, which will amaze
and baffle you with incredible participants showcasing stylish feats of
strength and movement. All this to a sound track supplied by some of the
UK’s best-loved Hip Hop DJs including Shortee Blitz, Renegade, Hazze and
Fingaz.
Hip-hop don’t stop, but take a second to realise what the PS2 BBoy
Championships has achieved!
