Many of you will know Big Narstie by now
and if you don’t then in the very near future you will. His comedic rhymes and “Grindie” songs are making him one of this years best acts. When I interviewed him this is what he had to say for himself.
How are you today?
Everything’s cool thanx!
What sort of upbringing did you have?
My upbringing was good. Mum was on point. I was brought up not dragged up!!!
Do you think it affected your music at all?
Yeah, my household was funny, that’s where I get the charisma.
How did you get into music?
Through my family, I used to follow my cousins to raves. All I wanted to do was wine up a buff ting, but then I wanted more…Love from the stage.
Where do you draw your inspiration from when you are writing?
I draw it from life…and PO (Marijuana)…Oh yeah, and I need a bowl of rice crispies when I’m writing.
Who would you like to work with?
Cold play, Oasis, big British acts. Something different.
What has been your favourite Collab?
Spun a web with Shystie, Lman, Solo, and Demon, which opened up doors for me.
Can you see yourself still doing music in 10 years time?
Yeah I can, it’s in my heart, that’s my gift.
Is there anything else you would like to do in the media? E.g. radio presenting, TV etc.
I’d love to have my own comedy show, like David Chappelle. I think mine would be better.
What would you be doing if you weren’t doing Grime?
I’d still be doing music. Have you heard me sing, I got the voice of an angel.
What do you do when you’re not working?
I write more lyrics, and go to the Gym…my manager’s got me working hard.
What has been your favourite gig, radio or studio experience and why?
The Finsbury park festival, there was like 10000 people there, they were going crazy, very hype.
Do you reckon you can take Bigz?
Dem man are like carrots, I’m a diamond. I’m the only sexy fat kid on the scene…Nah big up Bigs, we’re representing all the fat kids on road.
What does it take for a grime artist to break outside of London?
A lot of radio tours, a lot of mix CD’s, you’d be surprised how they circulate, videos on channel U, and make use of the internet, big up Ukstreetsounds.com. It all helps.
Are L.Man & Talapaton going to do a tune together?
Not that I know of.
Who is your favourite artist in the UK scene at the minute and why?
Corinne Bailey Rae, she’s really smooth. And that fat guy Big Narstie, he’s the biggest ting since Air Force 1’s!
Do you enjoy doing “grindie” type stuff or is it just an attempt to cross over or to try and sell more records by appealing to the rock heads too?
Nah…I really like their music. You have to enjoy your music in order for people to feel it, or else it just wouldn’t sound good.
Do you think that UK Hip Hop and Grime could/will ever be as successful as American Rap?
I couldn’t tell ya, I’m not Mystic Meg. All I do know is I’m gonna buy my mum a house. I can’t speak for everyone else.
What advice would you give to an aspiring MC?
Hard work and determination, make it happen you’re a captain. Big up Solo.
What have you got in the pipeline and what can we expect from Big Narstie in 2007?
‘The mind of a fat guy’, my albums coming soon, my new mix CD ‘Don’t F’ing look at me’. And I’ve just been given a role in the new Dub Plate Drama series coming out ion the summer. WOW!!!!!
Anything you want to say to the people of UKHH.com, a closing statement?
Yeah…Hello Hi, Tap of the morning to ya, Life is a Dice Game. Thanx to everyone supporting me, make sure you buy my album or I’m gonna be very upset. One
