I make no bones about it, Phazes is one of the illest producers in the world right now! His beats are stoooopid! He’s been grinding away on the Gold Coast doing his thing for a while now and at the beginning of the year moved down to Melbourne to be closer to certain things business and music wise and I’m glad he did. Officially a sick caaaaant, you will definitely hear more from this man in the future.

State your name and occupation

M-phazes - Beatsmith extraordinaire

Give us a little history of what you've been up to?

Just working on Phrase's record, Bliss n Eso and I did a charity track that will be out soon, and just knockin out beats for Supastition, Wordsworth and Stricklin, also check me out on Skyzoo's new shit and Eternia among others.

What first got you into making beats? Was there a defining moment that you can remember?

Just listening to Public Enemy, De La Soul and the likes and wondering how they made those beats to looping open parts of tapes to blanks, I also played the drums for 5 years so it was a progression.

You've not long moved down to Melbourne from the Gold coast? How has this changed things, what differences have u noticed?

The scene is obviously more prominent here, people take it a little more seriously and the record stores are ill! There is however a lot of bitching between crews and shit but I guess that comes with such a diverse scene of artists

" I would describe my sound as some dirty soulful thumping golden era hip hop, with a splash of bitch slapping pimpness! ..."

You used to rap too yeah? What made you stop?

Just wasn’t for me, I couldn’t focus on it enough to take it seriously.

I think you have quite a distinctive sound to your beats, would you agree and how would u describe it?

I was influenced by the likes of Premo, Pete Rock, Dilla, Large Pro etc so I come from that dusty sample, knocking drums school of hip hop, but I try just mimicking a style. I would describe my sound as some dirty soulful thumping golden era hip hop, with a splash of bitch slapping pimpness!

For the producers out there, what equipment do you use and describe the process involved for you when making a beat?

I use the laptop with Nuendo and the M audio Firewire, evolution midi keyboard and some Roland monitors and of course a lot of records. Most of the time I’ll look for a sample to set a beat off, usually something I can loop as a base or chop up as the main part, then I’ll add some rough drums to get the groove going or whatever, followed by extra little samples and shit and the bass-line usually comes last, then I’ll find better drums to match the beat. But now and then I can start with the drums if I have a pattern in my head, all depends on what I feel like at the time

Who are your top 3 producers of all time?

J Dilla, Premo and Pete Rock, yes very generic I know haha

What would be your dream line up for one your beats, pick 4 mc's

Kid, Play, Hammer and Vanilla Ice. That shit would blow up!

" I’m not trying to say I’m gonna make Australian hip hop history or anything I’m just going to make the music I like hearing and hopefully people feel the same!..."

You're working on an album at the moment yeah, tell us about that?

Yeah I’ve just started working on my production album, it will be all Australian artists and hopefully will gain some interest from the general public.  I’m not trying to say I’m gonna make Australian hip hop history or anything I’m just going to make the music I like hearing and hopefully people feel the same!

Who are some of the artists that we can hear using your beats at the moment?

Skyzoo, Eternia, Muneshine with Sean Price and Termonology, Jehst and Micall Parknsun, Royce, Elzhi, Supastition, 13th Son, Boltz, there’s more but its late and my brain is off at the moment

After the album, what’s your plans?

Start on the next album and hopefully pay off my debts!

How would u describe the Ozzie scene to an outsider and what artists would you recommend?

The Australian scene is young quality wise and it might take a bit of getting use to (accent and production wise) at first but there is a lot of quality shit here. Australian hip hop for the most part is relatable, so if you don’t shoot people in the street or sell crack or haven’t even seen a crack rock before in your life then you should be able to relate to a lot of the Aus shit coming out. As for artists I recommend, Pegz, Forthwrite, 13th Son, Funkoars, Spit Syndicate, Phrase and Illy! From there you can pretty much find anything and there’s a wide range of different styles out there to pick from!

Shouts?

Anyone supporting the true talent and not the fake bullshit
