If you are unfamiliar to the sounds of 'Parky' then listen
up! He may have only released a couple of 12's, and only
recently his debut album, but he sure knew how to put on a good
show! DJ Safesoul briefly caught up with the man himself, Micall
Parknsun, and Dubbledge at the very intimate venue of Cosies in
Bristol.
'Parky'
began his set sat down on the wooden, church like bench with
Dubbledge and Biscuit; equipped with a flute, he began spittin'
whilst sitting down and it was pretty clear to see that they
were going to stay like this for the rest of the set. Dubbledge
backed up Micall, and also provided his own lyrics on tracks
such as Combo and Hungry. The live flute provided something much
different to any other Hip Hop gig; it was chilled, but when he
performed No Frills it got people hyped and off their seats.
Micall definitely left the crowd wanting more, whilst the DJ
dropped some party tunes and to keep this party going DJ
Safesoul managed to quickly grab the man himself before he left,
in a quiet part of the tiny but loud club!
First of all, what
got you started in Hip Hop?
Man, thats a hard question. Life got me started in Hip Hop, Hip
Hop is life. Rap is what I do, but Hip Hop is life.
You've
been producing and MCing for a few years now but how come it’s
taken so long for us to hear an album from you?
That’s just how it happens, David Gray for example, took 6
albums before he got people interested in him. If that what it
takes for me to get people interested in me then that’s what
I'll do. If you want something you can't just sit around talking
about it, you just got to do it.

“...If you want something, you can't just sit around talking
about, you just got to do it...”
How does
it feel to be in Lowlife Records with Skinnyman and Task Force?
It’s
an honour to be with certain artists who are doing their own
thing. I'm just new to this and hopefully people will take to me
with open arms. It's all about progression, you've got to keep
your head above the clouds, above the shit that’s thrown at you,
and then you'll make it.
Who have
been your main influences?
Everything. Life is my main influence. I listen to all types of
mad shit, like, Coldplay, The Beatles, Badly Drawn Boy and other
artists like that. Everything inspires me.

“...I'm just new to this and hopefully people will take to me
with open arms...”
What do
you prefer, making beats or MCing?
I
like both! I like producing for other people, I've got loads of
beats at home but I want to be good at both, that’s why I'm
rapping a lot more now. I want to make it as an artist that’s
why I'm rapping on a lot of new stuff coming out. I'm on the new
Jehst album, UNDERWORLD ETHICS and on the new Asaviour album.
I'm also working on my second album, listen out for that. I want
to perfect my craft as an MC.
Finally,
what do you think of UK Hip Hop at the moment?
It's heavy, I'm kind of satisfied that people can go on to the
internet and download my album by just typing my name in. We're
going on the map now and I'm just trying to snuggle in and make
some money and make it as an artist, father and a family man,
but it’s hard, it’s hard.
Be sure to check for both Micall Parknsun’s debut LP on
Low Life. Full interviews with both Dubbledge and Parknsun due
later in 06.
