When a world renowned label chooses to put out a crew that’s name may not immediately ring memory bells, you know that something special is going to come out of the equation. Buffalo natives Pseudo Slang are about to unleash something soulful on to the masses, and helped along nicely by the giants that are Fat Beats, there’s no escaping it. Our roving reporter and beatsmith, The Last Skeptik, caught up with the talented fellows to discuss the all important matters of music, Vinia Mojica and Buffalo Wings…

Introduce yourselves for the uninitiated…

[Sick] I’m Emcee Sick from the Slang side of Pseudo Slang, you may or may not know of me from Xtracts of Slang, Baby Steps, and/or your corner payphone I monopolized with the ill access codes back in the day.

[Tone] I'm Tone Atlas of Pseudo Slang, also of Pseudo Intellectuals. You probably don't know me.

You are signed to Fat Beats Records, how did that hook up come about, and is there a certain pressure present due to the prestige of the label?

[Sick] Well, from being in the mix for a long time in the hip hop world and then from ordering hip hop records as a buyer for stores in the Buffalo area the relationship was solid with Fat Beats, then they heard the music and they liked it. Yes, it is a lot of pressure to book shows and such, but its all about getting the music to the right ears.

[Tone] What he said plus, added to the prestige of the label, is the prestige of our label-mates. We are signed with some underground heavy hitters including Ugly Duckling and Count Bass D. But truthfully, I feel like we make good music, and if given a chance, people will respond positively to it.

Run us through your debut LP "We’ll Keep Looking", what can we expect?

[Sick] Tone and I would like to think of our music as pretty honest. Most of the people who hear it term it as refreshing, and the songs they’ve heard are not even as thorough as what we’re keeping under wraps for the full-length. The title really summates how we feel about this endeavour and I feel it strongly reflects on how I feel about life at this juncture as well.

[Tone] You can expect beats sampled from some great music and some lyrics steeped in reality.

What was it like to work with the amazingly soulful presence that is Vinia Mojica on your latest single ‘Broke and Copasetic’?

[Sick] Vinia Mojica is mad cool. Really down to earth, really beautiful in every way, and above and beyond all that she is a truly natural vocalist. We’re still in touch and hope to collaborate on other things with Vinia in the future.

[Tone] It was kind of surreal. Especially since she was so cool and chilled out. Whenever you meet someone that you look up to in any way, who you've only heard or seen on the television, it's crazy to imagine that they are real people. On top of that, it was a room of guys; us, the engineer, and our A&R, so she made the place smell far better than it should have.

"…On top of that, it was a room of guys; us, the engineer, and our a & r, so she made the place smell far better than it should have."

You were formed from two separate crews: Pseudo Intellectuals and Xtracts of Slang, how did this amalgamation come about?

[Sick] Real recognize real, ha, that and how we felt the type of music we were making separately shared distinct qualities of honesty a lot of the hip hop out there today doesn’t.

[Tone] Sick used to throw a weekly on Thursdays called Baby Steps. He always supported and helped out what I was doing, or what my group at the time was doing. Looked out a lot. We did a few tracks over the years, then we decided to join forces, as we were having a lot of the same problems getting music out. We both wanted to work hard at the music and have it heard.

Enlighten our readers to some Buffalo slang we may not have heard…

[Sick] Ha, pop not cola, and baaarrrr instead o’ bar.

[Tone] Ha. He's got it. Pretty much when a girl from Buffalo says my name. It's more like, "AAAAAAAAnthony."

"A lotta cats exist below the poverty line though, however, struggling can have a way of keeping truth in perspective."

What’s the Buffalo hip hop scene got to offer the world?

[Sick] Some heart and soul, less bling, and more reality. A lotta cats existing below the poverty line though, however, struggling can have a way of keeping truth in perspective. There are too many dope cats in the Lo for me to list without excluding someone.

[Tone] Well the Broke and Copasetic beat was made by a Buffalo cat called DJ Daringer. The album will also feature a Buffalo emcee Third Son. He is a nasty cat on the mic. There are plenty of dope acts in Buffalo, they just need to get out. These two give a nice peak into what is bubbling here.

Did Buffalo create the Buffalo Wing?

[Sick] Yes, without harming a single Buffalo.

[Tone] Who knows. My friend's father claims to have invented the barbeque wings by accidentally spilling some sauce into a bucket of wings. Did he? I always believed him, why would he lie? Really though, I've rarely had a good chicken wing anywhere else.

"My friend's father claims to have invented the barbeque wings by accidentally spilling some sauce into a bucket of wings."

Lay down your shouts, plugs, and general genial banter…

[Sick] I have met too many new peeps to name who have heard our music and truly been supportive, and for that I am mad grateful. It’s also a pleasure to work with so many creatively brilliant artists we find ourselves amongst so often. Oh yeah, peace to the one Grap Luva, that’s a cool bro. The PStreet Team cats know who they are, and for anyone who is interested in joining, or just checking out more music and info on us visit: http://www.pseudo-slang.com

[Tone] Keep an eye out for the album. The single will drop any time now. Vinia Mojica is on it. You can hear it now on our myspace page.

The Pseudo Slang 'Broke & Copasetic' 12" is out now, available from king underground amongst other places...
