A Rigorous show is a sight indeed. Bare people on stage going wild, beer flying everywhere, the smell of weezy in the air…how it should be! I met Bigs back in ’02 when I went down to do something for PBS radio in Melbourne and we’ve shared a few zoots since I arrived back. Definitely on the grimier side of Melbourne hip hop Rigorous have developed a tidy roster of artists that has seen a regular slew of releases recently.

State your name and occupation

Bigs, aka The Weeded Sleuth, CEO of Rigorous Recordings. MC/producer

Give us an outline of what and who Rigorous Recordings are?

Rigorous Recordings is an independant, Melbourne based, hip-hop/rap label which stemmed from a 2 man crew 'Rigorously Prostituted' comprising of Bigs & Scott Skills. Producer Smoke along with MC's, Baz & Little Baz made up the original Rigorous line-up. Since then, the label has developed into a larger machine. With the likes of Fiz the iLL Kid, a.DD, Daywalkers (Kozi & Plarks), Herbivorz (Rizo & Xen-D), Willy Epson & DJ Drizlax joining the ranks. A group of artists with varying styles and backgrounds.

" The Melbourne scene has got it all ..."

Can you give us a run-down of any recent releases?

Rigorous Recordings Crew presents...The Harvest Vol 2 - Crop Circles (06)
DAYWALKERS - CHRONICLES OF THE 3RD REALM (07)
a.DD - THE SAME UGLY BUSINESS (07)
HERBIVORZ - CADILLACS AMONG MEN (07)

You've been involved in hip hop in Melbourne for a few years now. How would you describe the scene to someone who has not been here before?

The Melbourne scene has got it all considering its Aussie rap Mecca - the dope, the wak and everything in between across all elements. It has certainly grown since my first release on 2002. We get some good turn outs at the shows these days and it’s especially good to see the underground rap game attracting more and more sexy ladies...

So with so many of you it must be hard going on riders at shows yeah?

Rigorous crew are always rolling deep at the shows, but it’s no entourage Mr Doorman... all contributors over here!! We like to throw in heaps of different tracks from our varied range of artists in the live sets. Posse cut kings…

What's in the pipeline for Rigorous in the future?

COMING SOON -
BIGS PRESENTS - SOAP SCUM LYRICS VOLUME 1 featuring GRAND AGENT, RETAYNER, FRAKSHA & RIGOROUS RECORDINGS CREW
FIZ THE ILL KID - DEBUT ALBUM 'STATUS PENDING'
SCOTT SKILLS long awaited solo album 'LYRICAL WARFARE'

" and it’s especially good to see the underground rap game attracting more and more sexy ladies... ..."

You're off to New York soon yeah, how do you think the American's will take to hip hop with an Australian accent?

I can only hope they give the aussie sound enough of a chance to realise the real. I have no doubts we will get our props. We have done several collabos with US artists and they have all been feeling the aussie take on hip-hop. But there’s only one way to find out for sure...

Who would you say are the top three Melbourne based artists outside of the Rigorous crew at the moment?

1 - Retayner - droppin his album through Pang Productions (Mata & must) hands down 1 to watch.
2 - LC - kings obviously
3 - Creep Team

Finally any shouts?

Yes…shouts to NINE HIGH CREW the craziest rhyme spittas from bocky north to Britain !!! peace

- Fraksha
