It’s
amazing what can change in half a year. East London Crew Roll
Deep
have now officially left their label ‘Relentless’ after
releasing last years critically acclaimed album ‘In at the Deep
End’. Although if you thought Wiley and co were ready to succumb
to the pitfalls of this cut throat music industry, you’d be
wrong. Currently working hard on new material for round 2, the
entourage have a clear message for the fans- it’s not over and
their coming back stronger than ever- deal or no deal! Ben Spurr
caught a quick chat with the crew just before a recent show in
Leeds.
I
interviewed you boys about 6 months ago; can you update me on
what’s gone on since then?
Flow Dan: Well, 6 months ago we had a record deal, today
we don’t. But that’s not a problem because we sold 85,000 and
we’re about to set up our own label and put out our second album
which we’re working on at the moment.
So
you’ve gone from Relentless?
Flow
Dan: Yes. We’re also working on a mixtape at the moment
called ‘Rules and Regulations’ and its gunna tear down the city!
Any news from Scratch?
Scratchy: Yes man, there’s a lot coming out, there’s a
Trim and Scratch album that we’re just doing now. There are
loads of mixtapes and loads of new stuff that we are doing, cos
I don’t like old stuff- it’s a new dawn!
Who’s producing on the new album then?
Scratchy: It’s gunna be mainly Wiley, Danny (Weed), I
produce aswell and there are gunna be JME beats on there. Target
also- just all the family, basically everyone in Roll Deep
in-house producing.
Carnage, tell me about your new mixtape album ‘Grimey’ that has
just dropped?
Carnage: Me and Maximum mixed it, it’s just a definition
of the Grime scene from the beginning to what’s going on now
really. It’s a mix up of all the classics from Dynamite and So
Solid Crew to ‘Hype, Hype’ and all the stuff that’s going on
now. There are a couple of Roll Deep freestyles on there too so
look out for that.

“...Iisten out for us ‘cos we’re not finished...”
If
you were to namedrop the artists who have influenced you and
those you consider to be the best in the game, who would they
be?
Scratchy:
Right go, Biggie Smalls obviously, Cassidy- they didn’t
influence me though. Who else is there- Jay-Z obviously, Cam’ron.
Breeze:
Yeah, also Eminem.
FlowDan:
and Sizzla!
I
saw you at the Urban Music Festival last year, do you know if
the event is going to be held again this year?
Flow Dan: Not really Bothered.
Breeze: We’re just concentrating on doing some work man,
also with awards- if we’re not winning them we won’t be
attending no award shows this year. So until they get in touch
with us we don’t care.
Any final messages from the entourage?
Flow Dan: Yeah, what we’re gunna do is get everybody to
just look out for everything that we are doing in the future and
listen out for us ‘cos we’re not finished!
Look out for various mixtapes and the all important second
album from Roll Deep coming later this year. Until then, whet
your appetite with their latest mixtape ‘Grimey’ which includes
a bonus DVD and is out now on the label DMC.
