Aggression, frustration and artistic ability is what feels Sir Plus with the passion that has earned him up most respect around the streets of Bristol and also from 1xtras big daddy, Skitz. Sir Plus and his many Affiliates, including the Epidemics; Bear, Terminal, DJ Lean and the new and up and coming grime phenomenon that is Bugzy. These are the guys that you can see backing him up on tracks and providing such a strong stage presence when performing the Grimey but ‘not Grime’ tracks of Big Rass Crew and Pull of Da Herb. I met up with ‘Plus in a local Bristol pub, where he also brought along Souljah Cliques main man Kelz for a chat about Full Cycle and being Sir Plus.

“...I feel that the market isn’t right at the moment...”

Sir PlusSafesoul: Ok for all those who don’t know, who is Sir Plus?

Sir Plus: He’s a guy that is artistically and socially frustrated. Sir Plus to me means margin over profit; I’ve got more out of Hip Hop than I ever expected after coming from nothing.

Safesoul: You’re signed to Full Cycle, how did that come about?

Sir Plus: Basically I’ve know Roni [Size] for years, our families are friends and he’s always supported me and been interested in what I’ve been doing. We decided to do the Urban Music Festival so Roni helped with the promo for that and provided a kind of support network. After the Urban Music Festival, Roni came up with the idea of a development deal, I don’t really know what this means, but it means I get use of the studio and Full Cycle offices for the album.

Safesoul: That leads me on to my next question, when can we see the album dropping? And any special guest appearances?

Sir Plus: Firstly we’re going to bring out the first EP properly, it was out on a white label, it should be ready in the next few months. Then depending on how the market takes it, then we can decide to bring the album out. I might not even bring an album out straight away, maybe just a mini album at first because I feel that the market isn’t right at the moment....... [Goes into a little chat about the music industry with Kelz]

“...I want to be myself and not be influenced...”

Where was I? Oh yeh ok, expect Epidemic Affiliates, I’m not going to tell you exactly, but Kelz, Souljah Clique, Bugsy, B.Bop to DJ Quest doing the cuts. The list endless so watch this space!

Sir PlusSafesoul: Who do you feel is running things in Bristol?

Sir Plus: Other than myself and The Affiliates, Da Label, other youths out there like Little Bear, GI, King George, Bugzy, there’s to many man! There are a lot of people doing a lot of things but its not just situated in the ghetto no more, which is kinda nice.

Safesoul: Do you feel there is less Media attention on rap artists outside of London?

Sir Plus: Yeh there is but at the same time I don’t feel that the media attention that they have in London is even right for me. You can’t pigeon hole my stuff, it isn't Hip Hop, Grime or Drum and Bass. When you’re being played on 1xtra, they bracket you into a certain market of sales and you can’t break out of it.

Safesoul: Who are your main influences?

Sir Plus: I try not to be influenced, so I try not to listen too much, but there are a few things that I do like. UK wise I like Lewis Parker, Klashnekoff. Producers I like are Sabotage and Skitz and J Dilla. I want to be myself and not be influenced.

Sir PlusSafesoul: Finally what advice would you give to a Bristolian trying to make it in the Hip Hop scene?

Sir Plus: Be true to yourself and be real, don’t try and pretend. Embrace where you came from and bring something new to the table that no one has heard before.
