Spida Lee is one of those raw emcees,
who when you hear for the first time, you feel like Hiphop is coming
back! Having dropped the heavy-weight LP “The Foundation”, 2hip thought
it was only right to catch up with Huddersfield’s star man to see what’s
going on up north.
Can you give the
people a little introduction to yourself please man?
Yeah, yeah what’s gwarning UKHH.com. This is Spida Lee representing
Huddersfield on Rubicon Records.
How about the name,
what’s the history behind that?
When I was younger I used to have plats in my hair that made my head
look like a spider and I was the smallest in the crew. I could climb
over any high wall or fence. So they started calling me Spida, I just
added on the Lee because that’s my first name.
Spida Lee may not
have been known to that many people prior to “The Foundation”. Where’s
Spida been?
Well before “The Foundation” I put out an EP called “Victims of
Society”. It was a 3-track EP, “Victims of Society” was the first track
produced by Miki B of Brutal Artistry. I called the second track “U Cant
Rap” produced by Beat Butcha and the third track is called “Sick Timez”
which featured J Lyrics and was produced by me. Before the EP I released
a track called “Verbal Assassin”, which was produced by Beat Butcha.

“...it’s places like Leeds, Bradford and even Dewsbury, where people
go crazy for that real Hiphop shit...”
You’ve been a member
of a few crews in your time, what’s the deal with them now?
Yeah first started rapping in a crew called Black Bullz, haha some funny
shit back in ‘92.Then I was in a crew called Tha Bomb Squad, me, Davo
Brown and my spar called Jamal aka John Smiths. We used to record our
tracks into tape-recorders in ’94 haha. I’m still part of a crew called
Practical Headz, we released an album called “Who Iz It” in 2005.
Any plans to do more
with them in the future?
Yeah were going to do some new shit in the near future, but for now
we’re just concentrating on “The Foundation”.
You must be one of
the first to put Huddersfield on the Hiphop map. What’s it like as a
scene?
I’m not the first, but glad for the recognition. There’s man like
Asaviour and Jehst who was up here doing his thing. I’m one of the first
to rep Huddersfield and stay in Huddersfield. Yeah the scene is ok,
still nuff headz feeling the real Hiphop but it’s places like Leeds,
Bradford and even Dewsbury, where people go crazy for that real Hiphop
shit.
Any artists us
southerners should be keeping a keen ear out for?
Yeah man Jack Flash, J Simple & the Ground Works Crew, JND, EXP and the
Freyed Knot live band and Don’t Talk To Strangers. There’s more still,
up north the scene is building up.
Who are you
influences you as an artist both historically and in music today?
I’ve got too many influences! Erm Boot Camp Click, Black Moon, Nas, AZ,
Redman, EPMD, Das EFX, Jay Z, Wu Tang Clan, Showbiz & AG, The Roots, Big
L. All that mid ‘90s east coast shit and some of that Westside too like
MC Eight, Snoop, B.U.M.S, and more. Mans of today Klashnekoff, Skinnyman,
Jack Flash, Frey Knot and my self haha that’s about it mate.

“...We used to record our tracks into tape-recorders in ’94...”
I see you’re into
your mid ‘90s Hiphop. For me the best tune on the album, “U Can’t Rap”
is really reminiscent of that sound. Did you set out to achieve that
sound, or is that just you and the people you work withes natural sound?
That’s just our natural sound, straight up old skool ‘90s.
I noticed you also
produced some of your album too. However, I’d still call you as an
emcee. Is that fair or do you have plans to change focus to the boards?
You’re right, I’m a straight up emcee and that’s my main thing. I like
making beats to see what I come up with then pass it to Sam Tha Seed to
finish it off.
What’s the feedback
to “The Foundation” been like so far?
It’s been bare love! A few people dissed it, but you cant please
everybody!
What’s next for
Spida Lee? A tour? Some singles?
Yeah I am looking to do a tour, just getting the dates. Dropping some
new shit soon and I have changed my flow so look out for my new shit.
