Stylah interview by Madrox Stylah Interview

Stylah's been about for a minute now. Always popping up here and there on mixtapes and what-not. Never failing to make people give that particular tune a second listen, at very least. With the abundance of his guest slot days out of the way. The man is now on a fully fledged war to get words to wax. Now having joined forces with the infamous Poisonous Poets, it seems the industry better have there flak jackets ready. I caught up with him to chat mixtapes, videos and much more...

“...but don’t get offended and try battle me 'cos I will knock you out...”

Madrox: Evening Stylah, of all the people I've interviewed for ukhh.com so far, your one of the people who needs least introduction. But regardless, would you care to state your name, where your from and what your about?

StylahStylah: Stylah from SE7, London town. I’m about executing thoughts that most people experience but find it hard to articulate. I'm that peoples person that’s walked all walks of life and can represent that in a clear and fresh way.

Madrox: Amen to that. Ok ...so, your now a member of the infamous Poisonous Poets with some of the UK's foremost MC’s. How's that been working out for you?

Stylah: Its heavy always having dope spitters around you 'cos you’ve got a real rappers opinion whenever you need it. I mean its easy if you’re a deep spitter to just get a couple no names around you to make yourself look better but to me this is a challenge. If you can shine in Poisonous then the chances are you'll shine anywhere in the world you feel me. With Double P I really get that feeling like I'm the final piece in the jigsaw, you get me? Like now Stylah's aboard its case closed. Next step world domination.

Madrox: Must be a nice feeling. Is there anything you’ve noticed or picked up on, about the industry, which you perhaps were unaware of before you joined the Poets?

Stylah: Yeah, and I'm a natural born hustler, so I tend to pick up things quick but there's actually so much to this rap shit that your just blind to until you reach a certain level. At one point Poisonous signed to a major and shit, so there was quite a bit a could learn from that scenario without having to actually experience all the fuckery myself, you get me? I kinda learnt that this whole rap shits like a criss girl in a dance that you spend all your money, time, and game moving up, but when you do finally get her home you realize she was actually spotty, buttas and fat and likes to chat shit, but the thing is by then you just wanna fuck it anyway 'cos you put so much into it. Slag. On a serious note though, Doc (Brown), to me is the model professional. So just having him around as a kind of mentor is a privilege in itself.

“...I'm that peoples person that’s walked all walks of life and can represent that in a clear and fresh way...”

Madrox: That's quite an analogy, haha. Ok so back to you. The mixtape ‘Prince of Thieves’ has been doing the rounds for a little while now, what's the general response been since the release?

Stylah: I've sold over 9,000 copies of Prince of Thieves and the general response has been very positive. If I'm real though, that mixtape was just a part of my story tryna find myself as an artist. In a way, I'm kinda pissed I put it out 'cos it don’t do me justice as far as skills and delivery go, but on the other hand fuck it. It is what it is, you get me? At least for those who bought it, they can feel a growth with me and the progression from a good artist to a great artist. I'm not saying the response has been bad, 'cos trust me its been heavy, and I appreciate all the love I've had back off it, but in comparison to 'Crash Course' its more like a prelude than a polished project. Oh yeah, big up to D-Raw and his road-distribution network by the way 'cos he's half the reason I even sold so many copies in the first place. Big yourself up fam.

Madrox: I feel you on putting out stuff you think you've surpassed man. Ok, so with the mixtape doing well you musta done a good couple shows. What's the best show you’ve ever done and why?

Stylah: The best show I've done was after the anti-war march last summer. Everyone proceeded to Trafalgar Square and I was on the bill with Lowkey. There were over 50,000 people there all going mad and making up bare noise. Afterwards I knew exactly what them rock dudes meant when they say there's no better high then performing in front a of a packed crowd. They get them kinda crowds at every show, but to me it was just nuts. I almost stripped my top off and jumped into the crowd, but that woulda been kinda long still.

Madrox: Hahaha. Stylah - 'Rock God' - here's a good one for you. Your allowed to collaborate with any producer, one British MC and one American MC (Alive or dead) on a track for your new LP - who would you chose to spit with you and who does the beat?

Stylah: Premier, Tony D and Jay Z
That’s got hit written all over it, I lie?

“...With Double P I really get that feeling like I'm the final piece in the jigsaw, you get me? Like now Stylah's aboard its case closed. Next step world domination...”

Madrox: Sounds dope to me bro. Definitely one to please the heads. Moving on. Tell me 3 LP’s you couldn't live without….?

StylahStylah: Jay Z -Reasonable Doubt
Talib Kweli - Reflection Eternal
Nas - The Lost Tapes
I just thought of another 20, but its your game I guess.

Madrox: Haha, nah I'll think we'll stick with the three. There dope though to be fair man! Getting back to the matter at hand. Do you have a new project on the way and if so what is it? Have you titled it yet?

Stylah: 'Crash Course' is out in a few weeks. It’s a mixtape which is mixed entirely by DJ Snips. He definitely gets his shine on it. Its called 'Crash Course' because I honestly believe most of the mixtapes out of this country have been straight swag. This is a 'Crash Course' in making a mixtape and I hope rappers and DJ’s alike can take heed and start to fix up. Yeah, the albums finished as well. Its called 'Treading Water' and features Skinny, Kyza, all the Poets and couple other secret big names. Production duties go to Snips, Chemo, Sivey, Butcher, Stereotype, Caramac, Nutty P and Kafari so there’s an abundance of sick beats. Look out for this in the 3rd quarter.

Madrox: Word to that. Sounds like a nice line up mate. OK, so I've been watching a fair few battles online recently. What's your take on the growing battle scene in London - have you been to any jump off events and if so, what were your thoughts?

Stylah: I love seeing them fuckers tear into each other. Its dope. I cant say I'm mad into it 'cos that would be a lie, but I like Chester, Mic Assassin, Professor Green, Stig, Reveal and there's probably a few more names I cant think of off the top, but don’t get offended and try battle me 'cos I will knock you out. Jump off needs more real music in my opinion. Its more something for the over-excited ones than me. I'm real.

Madrox: Haha, fair enough. Can we expect any videos from your camp anytime soon?

Stylah: Right about now were sitting on a whole artillery of videos, mixtapes, albums, collaboration riddims. Its Sick. Were strategizing the releases though so you could get a Rev's thing next, or a Double P group ting, or something off my album. You never know until we lick you with it.

“...I kinda learnt that this whole rap shits like a criss girl in a dance that you spend all your money, time, and game moving up, but when you do finally get her home you realize she was actually spotty, buttas and fat and likes to chat shit...”

Madrox: Keeping heads on their toes then? Smart. OK - You appeared on DJ Skully’s mixtape 'Bring It Back'. How was that for you?

StylahStylah: Erm. That was last year. Talk about sleeping on the kid. Fuck me.

Madrox: Haha, my bad man, I'm just a simple country boy going from your site. Moving on swiftly then, tell me the best film you’ve seen recently……..?

Stylah: I can tell you the worst. 'Rolling with the Nines'. What a fucking disgrace. Over budgeted, under acted, wack story, cack casting. The wickedest ting is the rappers do the best acting in the film and they’ve only been acting for a minute. Robbie Gee don’t fit the gangster role and neither does that light skin dude. Johnny Allen was gully though. Lets not back this film just 'cos its British. Lets back something with proper quality that represents us. Fuck it, I'd rather buy a Norwegian gangster film if its more realistic and a better film to watch. Shame on you.

Madrox: That's a pretty scathing review, haha. Pulling the spotlight back to you for a sec. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Stylah: If I was to tell you the plans, you'd think it’s an ego ting. I'll tell you what. Ask me again in 5 years.

Madrox: Haha, ok man that's a deal. Lastly, do you have any messages or shout outs for anyone?

Stylah: The Double P government (Kizzy, Doc, Thera, T, Revs and DJ Snips), Elementary Entertainment (Watch out for these man), and whosever's still got the heart to swing for this hip hop ting. One Love.

Madrox: Thank you very much for your time mate. Peace.

Stylah: A man on a mission. If you wanna peep more about his goings on then log yourself onto
www.myspace.com/stylah or www.poisonouspoets.com. Thanks for reading. Peace peoples.
