I'm Blu, dabba dee, dabba die

 The self produced hype...
After tremendous success in the USA, BLU has just opened its UK office. BLU is the magazine with the CD that people are checking for everywhere from London to Brooklyn to Oakland. Targeting todays generation, it's the magazine of survival information. BLU is about reality with no holds barred, and it covers culture, social concern, and spirituality. Every issue includes a CD and it's almost advertising free.

The CD with each issue is a FULL-LENGTH COMPILATION with performances from artists like MOS DEF, TALIB KWELI, DEAD PREZ, OZOMATLI, MEDUSA, THE COUP, DEAD PREZ, RICANSTRUCTION, ANTIGUA, BAHAMADIA, ASIAN DUB FOUNDATION and many more. The CD features hip hop, punk, latin, funk, reggae, world beat, and spoken word artists.

The writing in BLU is true to the grassroots and right on time, with words and insights from Angela Davis, Afrikaa Bambaataa, Assata Shakur, Dolores Huerta, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Desmond Tutu, Laura Whitehorn, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Tupac Shakur's mother Afeni Shakur, Sonia Sanchez and Piri Thomas, plus regular coverage of events, music and the movement scene in cities around the world.

Past issue's have featured: SURVIVAL: ABOLISHING POLICE TERROR, including an interview with Tony Toni Tone's Dwayne Wiggins, profiles of community organizations, a hilarious look at the Latin Pop explosion by Sofia Quintero, and an interview with Chuck D of Public Enemy. INDIGENOUS REALITY with a profile of Mos Def and the writtings of Leonard Peltier. And then, the good news about Y2K, BLU's special issue on WOMEN IN STRUGGLE is just out and comes with a CD of ALL WOMEN ARTISTS including Bahamadia, Medusa and Rha Goddess - available now.

Coming soon on BLU look for more from Bahamadia, Les Nubians, Chuck D, Tony Toni Tone, Assata Shakur, Ricanstruction, Dead Prez, Rage Against the Machine, Los Pleneros de la 21, The Coup, Mos Def, Asha Bandele, Poor Teachers, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Bruderhof Kids, Prophets of Rage, Antigua, Fred Ho, Fermin Muguruza, Channel Live, Orko tha Sykotic Alien, UNO the Prophet, La Bruja, Quetzal, The Roots, Asian Dub Foundation, The State of Bengal, FunDaMental, and the Mountain Brothers, to name a few.

 The truth...
This magazines nice....fitting in a niche somewhere between HHC, The Big Issue & Socialist Worker (and also nothing like any of them). It's intelligent and amazingly informative. Issue 6 had features on Afrika Bambaataa, Native American rap, aboriginal hiphop culture, Poor Righteous Teachers, Mos Def and so much more. It's about music, politics, racism, facism, anti-establishmentism, all very well written and thought provoking. Not to mention the CD which covers a wide musical spectrum of all the styles it says above. With the new UK base we can look forward to more features about homegrown issues (issue 6 had Asian Dub Foundation talking about Satpal Ram) and also learn about experiences around the world.

Definately Recommended
