The Message © ukhh.com 2000 - 2001
Now four issues deep and possibly not looking at a fifth, the pocket sized Message Mag is required reading for any head interested in broadening their knowledge. Riz has steadily grown this publication despite many problems with backers and business types which have threatened to close it down. Combining contributions from such well known UK Hip Hop DJs such as MK and Disorda, along with interviews and articles on both the largest names in the game and some of the most obscure unsigned talent the magazine has everything including reviews you can trust.
Based in Glasgow the mag has a refreshingly different perspective to most other Hip Hop publications with its no frills and no bull attitude, initially I suppose this was more of a fanzine and was distributed free, but has always fought above its weight and for the last two issues has had a colour cover and for this issue they introduced a price of £1. A well justified charge considering the content, which includes a mixture of long and short interviews with artists including Ty & Shortee Blitz, Cypress Hill, Dynamic Duo, Jungle Brothers, Task Force and Mell 'O' as well as regular columns by MK and Disorda and the usual News, Charts, Competitions and pages of Graf.
A quick read at only 24 pages (some of the text is quite small though) and some of the interior pages print quality left something to desire, a for runner to the likes of Rago. Lets hope there aren't too many obstacles to getting issue 5 out...
Available in some good record shops and from Riz directly.
