One of my favourite albums of 2005 was Dooley O's 'I Gotcha' album. Funky beats and great lyrics. The Connecticut rapper - producer - DJ - beat archaeologist is widely recognised in DJ circles as the first in to sample 70's band Skull Snaps' It's A New Day. I caught with him on tinterweb for a brief exchange of words.

Please introduce yourself and tell us the last record you bought.

Dooley-OI am Dooley-O aka Asma Spin Laden, Dooley High and Dooley-O Iglesiass. The last record I bought was Zapp's 'More Bounce to the Ounce'. I copped it at this bar so I can cut it up.

Who are the great storytellers of modern hip hop?

I would say Grandmaster Caz or Spoonie Gee.

How did hip hop reach Connecticut back in the day?

We're only 2 hours away so we picked it up on the radio and culture stretched out our way.

How did you hook up with the UK's Lewis Recordings?

I did it the old school way. I sent them a demo, my boy Quo was like "Send these cats a tape".

Are most underground rappers in the U.S. still working a day job?

Put it like this well they better if they want to pay bills. What freaks me out is a lot of them get hooked up for tours etc, but no one calls me . Like Lady Pink would say in Wildstyle, damn man!

“... people might download to check the music so hopefully if they like it they'll like it enough and cop it …”

How does illegal downloading affect you?

Well people might download to check the music so hopefully if they like it they'll like it enough and cop it. I'm sure it's hurting me and the label, maybe music should be free sometime soon.

Where is the livest place for hip hop in the U.S. at the moment?

Dooley-OI would say California. They love all types of music there!

Is Planet Rock (by Afrika Bambaataa) the most 'European' hip hop song? It contains samples from both Stravinsky (a stab from 'Firebird') and Kraftwerk.

Planet Rock is the shit. I don't where it came from, but put that record on anywhere and you'll see a old-school cat start b-boying. That's hip hop!
