Fugazi were making big noise a couple of years ago,
but it seemed to have gone quiet for a bit. Are
the lads getting ready to return? Wytfang decided to have a chat with the
Fugazi Rum crew, to find out
what they have been up to since the Red album, their new member,
what blues means to them and their hook up with Kope...
Who are Fugazi Rum?
Fugazirum consists of Huss, Me and our newest member, Rev.
Benjamin J. Smith
Where did the name come from?
We made it up! Sounds phat tho! Nah, fugazi means fake or messed
up and rum means odd, and I like necking it so it was a good
enough reason to stick it on the end, there was already a
massive punk band called Fugazi anyway.
You’ve just finished the new album, what’s it all about and why
did you decide to blend Hip-Hop with the Blues on the project?
Yeah, the new album’s different to our usual stuff but still
carrying the essence of what we have always been about - a step
away from the normal. The blues influence has always been an
avenue we have looked at. We are all big listeners and we
thought taking the oldest black street culture and mixing it
with today’s sound would work, done in the right style. This
showed out when we dropped the Black & Suspicious release and
had a surprising interest in Dealers Stealers, which we had
recorded 2 years before. Quick after The Red Album came
together; it was finished in around 3 months.

"...We are making steady progress..."
Who is this Rev. Benjamin J. Smith?
He was a guy I half knew from school, and a work colleague of
Huss. He’s sick on the guitar, also bass & double bass. Working
with live instruments has been a growing experience for me. He’s
an inviting guy to write with, and cause he sing also pretty
gruff our sound really gel's.
Besides Ben, there has been a whole load of new Rum members join
the crew, who/what are they?
To take this stuff live we’ve had to get a full band together.
There’s Rob on 2nd guitar, Al on drums, Tim on bass, Rich on
keyboards, plus lots of people in the background, like Johnny
cocktail (video and design), lee@gemini (web design) and Lewis
(photographer). If I forgot anyone big up for you.

"...It’s been good writing, chilling; enjoying the music vibe is
what it’s all about for me..."
What ever happened to Filla Man?
We had our issue but mainly our styles were just different, so
he parted to go on a solo project. We were still doing some
shows together, but that was about it. Not really sure what he’s
up to nowadays, but I wish him luck with what ever it is…
What the next thing you’re going to drop?
Another E.P. probably around December/January time, with more of
a peek into the new album. The tracks are still undecided apart
from the Rum Wid a Kope remix that will be on it for sure.

"...The blues influence has always been an avenue we have looked
at..."
Will Kope make an appearance?
Unfortunately that’s the only track, and it’s a secret ting too.
We kept the sound simple with just us 3 working on it. I would
have liked to have more guests, but we are still growing, and
it’s good to get your shit together before getting out inviting
others.
Will there be another video?
Ask Johnny Cocktail! No I’m sure there will be something in the
pipe line. Can’t say when, or what track but keep your eyes on
the website for that sort of info. I’m always trying keep it up
to date with our progress.
You’ve been doing quite a few shows recently, where can we
expect to see you?
It’s looking like October time. We are making steady progress
with the band rehearsals, we have a few more tracks to learn
before we are ready with our show but we are meeting more
regularly and that’s made a huge difference. We have already
been given interest from promoters for live gigs when we are
ready but all future shows will be posted on the web,
www.fugazirum.co.uk.

"...We made it up! Sounds phat tho!..."
Besides the EP, what else have you planned for (Releases/Collabo’s/Features
etc..)
Well since I finished The Red Album, apart from rehearsal it’s
given me free time to hook up with local talent like Nikki B,
Narsty Habits from Cambridge, Idiot Box, a local producer in my
area, also teaming up with Chemo and Syanyde to do some track
for mix tapes. Going as far a field as France to hook up with
this French guy Numero. It’s been good writing, chilling;
enjoying the music vibe is what it’s all about for me. No person
too small not into that rude bwoi attitude in the scense if UK
emcee stuck together in the scene it would be a stronger
movement we ant trying to prove to anyone we are just building
on the British empire ha-ha one!.
Have you got any shout outs/bigups etc….
Big up Kope, UK peace!
