Essex has a long and distinguished history when it comes to pioneering electronic music (the Prodigy, Depeche Mode etc). One of the artists who appears to be at the leading edge of the current hive of hip hopping activity in Essex is Jaimez of the Headzache Crew. He’s probably best known for his production of the beat which ignited the dynamite rhymes of Jibbarish from Ironbridge on “Drop Bombz”.

Why is Essex so mad for Hip Hop?

Jibbarish - Drp BombsDo you think so? I didn’t realise Essex was any crazier for their Hip Hop than anywhere else in the UK. But for sure we love our Hip Hop, The scene in Essex/Herts has really exploded in the last 3 years. We got some mad talent coming through and I feel BDI Records will be at the forefront of it all. The wealth of talent is apparent in sites such as www.headzache.com & www.essexhiphop.co.uk where just about every Essex crew can be located.

Is anyone in Essex making a living from Hip Hop yet?

No, nobody yet, there’s probably just a handful of rap artists in the country right now making cash, but I feel it’s a matter of “when” not “if” some one from here starts making waves, the quality is here for sure. But what seems to happen is, whenever anybody gets a little success in this country (rap-wise) they get dissed for being a sell out! And even though I know that’s not always an unfair thing, we need to be careful that when some one does break, we manage it correctly.

What is the set up at Bdi records?

Bdi Records is an imprint of Orgy Records; we set up about a year ago with Mistah Toe and myself. The team at Orgy give us plenty of support and back-up and we’re aiming to have a couple more releases this year to go with the first 12” we had out last year Drop Bombz with Jibbarish from Ironbridge, who I’m also doing an EP with this year. I’m also talking with the Pedigree Chumps (amongst others) from up north and hope to bring them into the picture at some point. So all in all the coming year looks busy for us and we hope to keep feeding peoples hunger for quality beats and ridiculously phat rhymes.

"...whenever anybody gets a little success in this country (rap-wise) they get dissed for being a sell out!...."

Do you use the music making software Fruity Loops at all? Any tips for beginners like me?

Jaimez and LeonErr… no. I’m not really a Fruity Loops fan to be honest. I’m not going to slag it off because I know cats that use it and get great results from it. As a tip for beginners, I would say just do as much research as possible into the kit you want to buy before you part with your hard-earned cash! Talk to other users, and don’t believe everything you read. But most of all use what you’re comfortable with, if that’s Fruity Loops, then hey, go for it. I like to use a combination of different software programmes and hard ware together because it gives me the freedom to do almost anything I want, and guess what … I’m comfortable with it. I know it sounds like a massive cliché but, making beats can’t be taught, it has to be learnt! Anyone can buy and use a sampler, programme a drum machine, but can you make the track bring the walls down? I can pick up the guitar and make it sound like a pile of shit easily.

Is the Essex hip hop scene mainly white? If so, what are the consequences of this?

Yes but, I don’t think there are any “consequences” as such, I know this sounds cheesy but it really doesn’t matter what colour you are coz it’s all about the beats mate. It’ not something that really weighs heavy on my mind, and I doubt if it does others.

"...The “Great British Public” are just a gigantic cash cow that needs to be milked on a regular basis, whilst little by little, and without most of us noticing, our personal freedoms are slowly taken away from us!...."

What is your reaction to the election result?

Hmmm… I’m almost completely indifferent to the election result to be honest, it doesn’t really matter to me who the f**k is in power; they all kinda stick to the same core beliefs anyway. The “Great British Public” are just a gigantic cash cow that needs to be milked on a regular basis, whilst little by little, and without most of us noticing, our personal freedoms are slowly taken away from us! I may actually stand for election myself next time around.

Have you ever been to Blackpool? Is it better than Southend?

I’ve never been to Blackpool but I’m sure it’s very nice. Southend’s dynamite (although I don’t actually live there). Throughout all the years I’ve been going there, I’ve always felt there was something darker, more sinister about the place after nightfall, and there is! So come on down.
