I got into Juttla in the early 00’s when I heard his brand of insane Asian-influenced drum’n’bass and breaks. He was the go to guy for slightly unhinged sampling and banging beats. He then went quiet for a while. Then we hooked up at Glastonbury and he and DJ Punkass rocked the crowd hard with some huge beats. Then a mutual friend of ours, Nerm (Shiva Soundsystem) tells me that Juttla’s got a new album coming out, it’s all hip-hop and it’s got Inspectah Deck, 2Pac and Notorious BIG on it, and they are ALL official tracks, sanctioned by the right rights-owners…
I was a little taken aback. Very excited though. So I got Juts to send the album through… and I thought, I should ask, what makes the Eastern Pressure pioneer think he can make some hip-hop tunes? Eh?
Introduce yourself to the ukhh.com audience…
My name is Juttla and I am a producer based in Wolverhampton. I have been making music for over ten years with my first release being released in 1993. I have just released an album on Wolftown Recordings called ‘Bass, Kicks, Snares, Spits’ which is a collection of tracks and remixes. The album features a whole host of guests from legends such as Notorious B.I.G, 2Pac and JT The Bigga Figga, alongside some well-known US talent like The Game, Slim Thug, Saigon, Freeway, Rass Kass, Pitbull, Inspectah Deck and Geolani. From the UK I have a whole bunch of talent too with LATE, Foreign Beggars, 10Shott, Creamo, P.A.C from Café Recordings, Jai Boo, Conman, Geniedon and Hard Kaur.
Ha, Ha!!! Yeh man, I produce that genre and still do! I am producer and like producing music! The Hip-Hop vibe was me just broadening my horizons and stepping up to a new challenge. Working with Wolftown Recordings was a very exciting and enjoyable experience. The hook up was simple really - I've known Tricksta 'n' Late from the early '90s from going out to clubs, they are like family to me – they're like my brothers. They asked me to remix a track for Wolftown from LATE's 'International Rhyme Spittin EP' and this whole Hip-Hop thing for me kinda started from there.
Because people like you give me a chance! Respects and much love to www.ukhh.com. Big up Park Street Pr and of course all the work that Tricksta and LATE have put in, big up Wolftown!
I'm a 2Pac and Biggie fan, so this is really big for me. Tricksta from Wolftown is a king for hooking that up for me! The deal was I'd do the remix and if they liked it they could use it for their projects & releases and I get to use it in my album mixtape. The fact I got two tracks on with 2pac still amazes me (especially as he features on two tracks). I am so proud of the work I did with these legends and working with the voices of such Hip-Hop legends really makes ya hair stick up on end! Wolftown have the links and within two days of agreeing to do the release Tricksta handed me eight tracks to remix.
Well, I've always been interested in producing music from a young age. I really started to take it more serious during the jungle days after going out to raves and listening to the likes of Grooverider and Fabio. I started messing round with a Doctor X and an Amiga, and my music soon followed. The transformation to Hip-Hop wasn’t that hard, I mean jungle comes from Hip-Hop and breaks anyway, plus I have always been into Hip-Hop and jammed a lot of varied material. My boy LATE keeps me up to date on all styles and coasts so I am constantly listening getting inspired as well as injecting that special Juttla juice!!!
Well I laughed and joked with Tricksta and LATE about getting 2Pac, Biggie and The Game on the album. I said I really liked Slim Thug and then I loved Wu Tang! They made it happen for me, and my beats stood up enough to get clearance and get released. Since then I have worked with a lot of artists and am constantly building my links. When I drop my second Hip-Hop album you’ll see!
It was a natural sound. The Asian sound is my sound and I just injected my flavour into the music. Not every track has Asian influences though; I didn’t just put that vibe into tracks for the sake of it. There’s something for everybody on the album, everyone who likes it loves the diversity of it.
These questions are really hard. I am really feeling Deep from Houston, who is on the ‘What The Fuck’ track with Slim Thug. I obviously love 2Pac because he touched on so many different subjects. Saigon has talent too. I am also feeling rappers such as Scarface, Papoose, Bun B, The Relatives, King Pimp Skinny Pimp, Mistah Fab, RH Bless, Chamillionaire, Geolani, Brotha Lynch Hung, K Rino and everyone in SPC, oh this so hard! I like so many different styles.
Again this is another tough one but firstly I am gonna say LATE for his hard work ethic, original style and the way he does his own thing and has built up such a large international fanbase. As an artist he amazes me with his whole vibe. He truly inspires me. 10Shott is also coming thru the ranks in a big way, he has an amazing flow and I love his singing and the topics he discusses. These two rappers are definitely under-rated in the UK. Other British MC’s I like is obviously artists like Foreign Beggars, Reload, Jai Boo, Supar Novar, Conman, Blade, Moorish Delta 7, Skinny Man, Conspic, Izzy G, Asher D, Dizzie, Kano…
On both tracks I had nothing but love. Honestly man, it’s getting a better response in the US than it is here!
Yeh, I’m gonna keep doing Juttla and there are many sides to Juttla. Doing Hip-Hop is something I feel confident with and at home with. I am working on a follow-up album for Wolftown and as long as a label like Wolftown keep backing me then I’m gonna keep on going.
Each track that was produced was a case of me making the beat for that person or crew. I had the emcee in mind when making the beat. With the remixes I obviously had to work around the vocal.
Big up Tricksta and LATE for their support and for believing in me! Thanks to your self for the love with the interview, respects! Big up Altered Ego Music and of course all my Wolftown people – 2006 we on the grind!!! Wolftown forever…
Make sure you check out these Hip-Hop releases that all feature Juttla production…
