 Mudmowth Interview

Welsh rappers were big last year.
They made it acceptable to
smoke lots of weed and wear bad tracksuits in an “ironic”
fashion, insult our mothers, and there wasn’t a sheep to be
seen. Thankfully a summer of “you knows it” is over and I’m
guessing Goldie Lookin’ Chain’s 15 minutes is up. Let’s hope eh?
In the meantime, I needed to hear some proper Welsh rap. And
there was this guy, Mudmowth, with his “Just to Get the Name
Known” EP who had to be spoken to. He’s a punchline king, he’s a
love rat crooner and he’s got an immense amount of charisma on
the microphone. Unfortunately, Wales is miles away so I had to
get him on the e-mail for a bit of chin-stroking and
kebab-sharing.
Introduce yourself and give us an insight into the mind of a
Turkish loverat...
I’m a 23-year-old Jekyll and Hyde style character from south
Wales who makes a living doing hobbles on people’s houses. I’ve
got a strange imagination and a hyperactive disorder so don’t be
surprised if you see me running around making stupid noises and
talking shit!!, I’m mean as fuck with a pool cue, so get you’re
fifty down. My main claim to fame is I’m actually Sigourney
Weaver’s nephew, believe it or not. I am the original gorilla in
the mist!! oh yeah I rap as well!
As a Welsh rapper, what are your thoughts on GLC?
I’m not a fan of their music, it’s not my kind of thing at all,
but at the end of the day their taking the piss out of
themselves so how can I answer the question seriously, they know
their audience and that’s who their aiming for they’re not
trying to appeal to the hip-hop heads. I know a lot of people in
Wales are pissed at them cos they think there's much more talent
here, which is true, but talent don’t sell so much nowadays u
need a gimmick and catchy music, so if u wanna do that go ahead.
you should have asked me about Ulrika Johnson I fukin hate her
the “slag!”
What is the scene like where you're from?
The scene in south Wales is massive at the moment, and there’s
definitely a lot of talent here. its just a pity people in
London and all round don’t really get to see wot goes on down
here so much cos we don’t have so many radio stations and record
shops, the good thing here is every1 knows every1 so it’s a
close nit thing and you always know wots goin on . mind you ,
you still have the jokers turning up at battles cos they’ve seen
8 mile , but that’s happenin everywhere now . I think a lot of
welsh rappers are gonna blow up soon, I think there’s too much
talent here for it not to happen.

"...I’m
actually sigourney weaver’s nephew, believe it or not. I am the
original gorilla in the mist!!...."
I even heard that one of Tom Jones’s sons has started making a
demo and he’s got his father to sing on 2 of the tracks. I dunno
how serious that is, but if it’s true he should blow up.
Who got you into hip-hop and who inspires you to be better?
I got into hip-hop thru basketball, started playing when I was
about 13 and got pretty good. I wasn’t really into music at all
at that time but every person around me then was playing Wu
Tang, Nas, Naughty by Nature and so on . the song that sticks in
my head that really sparked me and turned me into a fan was “OPP”.
I remember listening to that on my mates walkman in school and
I’ve been listening since. I remember buying a 4track a couple
of years later and recording stuff with my mates, which is like
a comedy show listening back to it now. eventually I got to a
point where I thought I was pretty decent so I started to take
it a lot more seriously.
I had a patch where I stopped writing about 2 years ago cos I
had a lot of shit going on in life, but as soon as I got my head
sorted and started recording again I had this EP to show for it!
and I’m not looking back now till I outsell Take That.
Tell us about your EP. What sounds did you go in for? How did
you hone your flow? What lyrical themes do you touch on?
My EP was basically something I just wanted to get out to let
people know about me and see what kind of response I got .
Thankfully I’ve had a really good response and it’s definitely
opened a lot of doors for me. I didn’t really go for a
particular sound to be honest just wrote over whatever beats I
was feeling most whether they were dark as fuck (Turkish
love-rat) or cheesy as fuck (rain and palm trees).
That whole idea fits in with my attitude as well, people around
me know I can be the biggest joker on the planet but the next
day, I’ll be a manic depressant who spends his time staring into
a space thinking all types of weird shit. fuck it though it
helps with my writing cos I never know what’s gonna come out
anymore.

"...girls
always love a freestyle aswell. just spot 1 u like go up 2 her
and rap about her clothes, her hair, mates wotever and I
guarantee shes like “ whooooah! how do u do that...."
What is “the Turkish love rat’s” best pulling technique?
Ha ha , you should ask Rachel Stevens. She fell for it. Remember
that track she had “Sweet Dreams my LA ex” , that was actually a
diss tune to me, the original was “Sweet Dreams My South Wales
ex “ but the record company told her it wouldn’t sell so she
changed it slightly. Listen to the lyrics its clearly aimed at
me. I got a response ready but she’s looking too fine these days
I wouldn’t want to ruin to my chances by releasing it I’ll wait
till she falls off.
Girls always love a freestyle as well. just spot 1 you like go
up to her and rap about her clothes, her hair, mates whatever
and I guarantee she’s like “whooooah! How do you do that “ and
you’re in with a shot then. Mind you I did it to a girl before
only to find out she was a copper, and she started threatening
me and all that. I dunno what the sentence is for freestyling
nowadays but she obviously weren’t impressed by me.
Shish or donor?
You’d have to ask Conspicuous from the Colony that. He is the
kebab king, he seems to give me a mixed kebab whenever I see him
so I can’t argue with that 2 for the price of 1 then innit! in
fact I don’t pay at all. Any rappers in Essex go see Cons at
stadium fish and chips he’ll sort u out with a lovely bit of
grub! You never know you may even get lucky and he’ll cook u up
something on the MPC as well. That’s some tasty shit!!

"...a
manic depressant who spends his time staring into a space
thinking all types of weird shit...."
What will you remember 2004 for?
On a serious note I’m gonna remember 2004 for that wave that’s
just hit Asia, something that big is much more important than
anything I’ve done or anyone else has done this year. It makes
you realise, you never know what’s around the corner in life so
enjoy it while u can. It’s mad seeing mothers who’ve lost 6 of
their children within 10 minutes of madness. Shit like that is
crazy.
What is your favourite album of the year?
Q-Unique “Vengeance is Mine”. I loved his stuff with The
Arsonists, but I think this album is even above that. It’s one
of the most personal rap albums I’ve heard for a while. If you
ain’t heard that you need to, I loved Murs 3:16 as well now 59
is up there tho. Lemar is sick with his!!!!
What is next for you?
At the moment I’m working on an album, which should be out
around Autumn time next year. I’ve been lucky enough to get
beats off some of my favourite producers at the moment in
Conspicuous, Ghost (who has blessed me with some mind blowing
shit, just you wait) Mr. Macadam is gonna be back with more
classic beats and an Australian guy called Devize who is mean as
fuck with his . Primo’s been leaving me voice mail cos he wants
to hop onboard but I haven’t had time to ring him yet I’ve been
too busy watching the DVD’s I had for Christmas. We’ve also just
started working with this awesome Venezualan graff artist for my
album cover. On some Master P glitter and gold shit!!!!! I’m
gonna make sure the album really turns heads in this direction.

"...you
should have asked me about ulrikka johnson I fukin hate her the
“slag!”...."
