QED
Nottingham is a city that
has given us many great artists.
One of arguably the
greatest ever groups in UK hip hop was Out Da Ville, which
formed around ‘Big’ Trevor Rose’s community recording studio at
the Russell Youth Club in the St Ann's district. Streetbeats are
one of the groups that formed from the ashes of Out Da Ville.
I interviewed Nicky Dimples (who co-wrote the Top 20 garage
classic 'Sorry' by Monsta Boy featuring Denzee) for the latest
news.
Please introduce yourself and tell us the view from your window.
Streetbeats
are Nicky Dimples, DJ Fever and Jay Knowles. Extended members of
the team includes Natasha Foster-Wilson (P.A and Marketing
Assistant) and Chris Woods (Music Lawyer and co-founder of JnC
Entertainment). The view from our window in respect to us is
looking pretty good right now.
There is a lot of interest and Love being shown towards us from
street level and within the music industry, in this country and
overseas. We just shot our first music video for the track 'My
Lover (Babygirl)' featuring the talents of 45 and smooth vocals
from Denzee. This video will be shown on MTV Base and Channel U
within the next 4 weeks. We are currently recording material
with local Nottingham talent such as Lee Ramsey, S.V Server and
Honey Williams. Our following release will be the club smash 'Missin'
U' featuring Denzee and Lee Ramsey.
Radio stations such as 1Xtra, Galaxy Fm, Kiss Fm and Power 96,
(an American radio station based in New Jersey) have been
supporting us along with local press such as Leftlion and the
Nottingham Evening Post. Right now we are trying to great
interest and a fan base for Streetbeats and we appreciate all
the love and feedback that we are receiving.

"...The
world Hip Hop media is not doing justice to the true meaning of
Hip Hop because it supports only what sells which is sex, money
and violence..."
Is
anyone in Notts making a living from hip hop at the mo?
The only people I know making a living from Hip Hop in Notts is
Joe Buhdah. He's worked with the likes of Estelle, Kalashnekoff
and John Legend.
How influential was Scorzayzee on the Notts scene?
Scorz is an AMAZING talent. He has been very influential in the
Notts scene. To a certain extent he helped create the scene in
Notts and also put us on the Map. He helped create interest in
Notts Hip Hop from people all over the county and abroad. He is
differently missed since he left the game but we are hoping to
bring him back on a track called 'Kings of Notts' featuring the
best MC's in Nottingham, basically this track couldn’t happen
without him, so watch this space.
What's your opinion on the state of the worldwide hip hop media?
The
world Hip Hop media is not doing justice to the true meaning of
Hip Hop because it supports only what sells which is sex, money
and violence and disregards Hip Hop with a deeper Message. The
media needs to go back to supporting the foundations of Hip Hop
and expose to people what Hip Hop truly stands for, without this
support from the media Hip Hop will continue to be nothing more
than your 50 Cents and your Young Jeezys (bullshit).
Who are the unsung heroes of Notts hip hop?
They include: Streetbeats (of course), Lee Ramsey, Scorz, S.V
Server, Shifty Spirit, 45, Scorpio, C-mone, Taurus, Joey P,
Smokes'n'Blunts and the list goes on.....
Are Goldie Lookin' Chain better lyricists than the average UK
rapper?
Can't comment on them because honestly, we don't listen to their
music.

"...He
(Scorzayzee) is differently missed since he left the game but we
are hoping to bring him back on a track called 'Kings of Notts'..."
What’s Notts like for a night out?
Notts is a great city to go out and have a good time, especially
on a Thursday, because I DJ at a bar called 'Naughty' and DJ
Fever DJ's at Mode on a Saturday night. If that’s not enough to
bring you to Notts then this will - the ratio of women to men in
Notts is 6 to 1. Always a bonus!
Anything you want to add?
Once again, thanks for your interest in Streetbeats and please
continue to show your love and support for UK Hip Hop. Respect!
One.
