We’ve been waiting for
Brooklyn-bred microphone fiend Wordsworth
to put out a solo venture for a long time. Last year he gave us
“Mirror Music,” which despite some iffy production was a
lyrically on-point piece of work that recalled his hey-days of
the Lyricists Lounge and verses on Tribe tracks and Blackstar’s
“Twice Inna Lifetime.” Featuring lyrics dealing with everything
from his spirituality to his children, “Mirror Music” was an
introspective journey into the mind of an articulate rapper.
He’s not just a rapper though. A student of acting, he has
appeared in “Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme” and has set his sights
on future acting projects, as well as more music with everyone
from the Beatminerz to J. Live to anyone else who can give him a
beat he’s feeling.
Here’s a quick e-mail exchange he had with Nikesh about his
album and his history.
Please introduce yourself and tell us your favourite Wordsworth
quote…
I’m Wordsworth from the group Punchline and Wordsworth. My
favorite quote would probably be the verse from “Twice Inna
Lifetime” on Blackstar CD.
“Yo, we fortified live, supportin' allies
The wack is tryin' to shorten our lives, it sorta waters my eyes
But here is some'n the cryin' talk about
The verse on that cassette you and cousin fought about
That led to God and Satan's fallin' out
Encourage the liquor for those who ain't here that you pourin'
out
On 3-way, your parents, preacher and spouse called my house
Revive or ruin, my theories of mics
Sony or Aiwa, black or white, I fit in all stereotypes
Search for a cast to plot, I make you a laughin' stock
So shook, I could walk a half a block and feel the aftershocks
Rain of acid drops, seek some help
Now don't rewind, get it the first time,
Shouldn't have to repeat myself
Eternally verbally, I have numbers, succumb to time outs
In rhyme bouts you'll dial 9, just to get a line out
Known fact or factors and non-rappers fractured
Results in more cast appearances than a hundred actors
Emcees I'm testin' like diseases injected in gerbils
Wordsworth, Kweli, Hi-Tek, Reflection Eternal..what...”
Why
has “Mirror Music” taken so long to come out? Tell us about it.
Mirror Music took awhile to come out because I had to learn what
I wanted to talk about to be here for the long run. I had to
discover what Wordsworth brought to Hip Hop. The production is
heartfelt adrenaline rush. I got Dj Avee and 3 D, Ayatollah,
Beatminerz, Curt Gowdy, Frequency, Dave Dar, Belief, all stars
with the future of production. The lyrical content is just
actual fact and reality of what’s in my life and everyone
else’s. It's a reflection of the world, that’s why it’s mirror
music.

"...Known
fact or factors and non-rappers fractured
Results in more cast appearances than a hundred actors...."
How
seminal was Lyricists Lounge in creating independent hip-hop?
Lyricist Lounge gave a lot of artists a place to go and be heard
and hone their skills. It was inspiring for people to know they
can find opportunities to be heard.
If
Rawkus was still around, would your album have come out on their
label?
Nah, I doubt it unless the budget and advance was right. Also,
if I had executive producer and creative control; because they
started trying to be down with trendy music at one point.
How
did you go about putting the collaborations and beats together?
Did you write to the beats and marry beats with pre-existing
lyrics?
I wrote all the rhymes to all the tracks no existing verses. I
put people on the album that I’m around on a daily basis.

"...The
wack is tryin' to shorten our lives, it sorta waters my eyes
But here is some'n the cryin' talk about...."
What
has been your favourite hip-hop release of the year?
I like College Dropout, Mf Doom, and Long Hot Summer. It was few
that I liked.
What
was the most pivotal moment of the last 12 months for you?
Seeing my project come out and seeing how it was embraced. So
now I’m just focusing on improvement and the best moves I need
to make for longevity.
What
are you working on at present?
Right now look for the Da Beatminerz album April 18th. I got a
song with Marco Polo from Canada called My Rights and I got a
song with Oh No that’s crazy. And I got a project with a band
called The Fire Dept, which is serious.

"...Sony
or Aiwa, black or white, I fit in all stereotypes...."
Who
would you love to work with?
I want to work with The Roots, that’s about it right now, not
too many.
