“Yes Whut” starts with its title track, billed as a cub banger, guaranteed to make any sound system bang. It’s little more than a hard bass kick with someone rapping over it. The drums are mixed louder than the rapper and so it is hard to appreciate his lyrics. Also, as the beat is so sparse, you can’t put the Prince of Thieves’ voice into any musical perspective. It would work better to have something to rap over, to give you something to do call and response to. He sounds confident and with potential. “I Wanna Be Wit You” is a bit Santana’s “Maria“, with its clean overproduced Spanish guitar and similar drum pattern. You can hear the voice a little more clearer now. He has nice imagery in this song but his voice stays in the same tone all the way through instead of emoting his words and feeling his syllables. As a love song, it fails, but as indication of his voice, it highlights some real potential. The next one is moody and with the Prince’s moody vocals over it, is a slow and brooding track that works quite well. “Get Stupid” isn’t as stupid as you’d hope it to be. I was hoping for a huge ridiculous break beat with some breakneck rapping. Instead we get a slow brooding synth-rap that sounds too sound module and un-organic. “Cry” has a nice guitar on it, but Prince of Thieves’ voice takes on a really high-pitched flow, which doesn’t quite work because by the end of the verse he is unable to sustain how he came in. The chorus is nice though, with a scratched in high-pitched vocal. “Stunt 102” is a freestyle, which shows off Prince of Thieves’ skills, and he does have some. A bit more experience, some better breath control and some better instrumentals mean that he can start releasing some good material in the years to come. © ukhh.com 1999 - 2003 |
