Smooth Hound Sharks 4 Track Demo (demo)

The Smooth Hound Sharks are a three piece outfit from North London, made up of The Inheritor, Darkus and Ladyee Berry. This 4 track demo comes on the back of some small successes on radio and through live shows, so it’s now important to convert those successes to some kind of finished product. This demo certainly delivers that on a production front. The groups background in other forms of music shines through, with a large range of samples and instruments making an accomplished sound across all four tracks. The lyrics sung by Ladyee Berry echo this ‘muscialness’, by adding a nice smooth vibe to tracks she’s involved with. She takes centre stage on the track ‘Butterfly’ and her voice shines through superbly.

Where this demo falls down is the emcees rather lazy, spoken word style rhymes fail to spark emotions near to that of the production or the vocals. The emcees input means the demo ends up sounding like something that Urban Species or Spearhead would have put their name to. On the track ‘Nostradarkus’, the emceeing comes across much better than in the other three, mainly because the voices seem to contain more passion in their delivery.

This lack of vocal charisma is the main downfall of this demo, however there are plenty of good points to make this by no means a failure. I’d be hard pressed to say I’d pay for this if it was released as it is, but with a little more work on the emceeing front, it’s not far off.
