This first release on Smoking Mics showcases a number of vocalists emerging from deepest Essex. The single uniting factor upon this twelve is DJ Pager who allows his smooth beats to be blessed by crews such as Ironbridge (‘The Product’), Ill Psychosis (‘Medi-evil’) and Concentration Camp (‘Potent Poetry’). The partnership works to nice effect upon the quirky trumpet based ‘The Product’ where Ironbridge’s rhymes hook tightly up to the beat, in contrast, ‘Medi-evil’ is a slightly less successful track as the slightly rushed gruff delivery doesn’t entirely suit the understated quiet arrangement. However, my favourite track was ‘Potent Poetry’ where emotive piano n’ simple synth loops were intertwined with tight cuts to underlay the most relaxed vocal performances on the platter. Overall, a diverse debut twelve showcasing emerging vocal talents alongside simple cohesive production from Pager.
