I like these people a lot. I first saw them supporting Dirtburg and their blend of live jazz and funk-tinged hip-hop made for a really good show. However, whereas most live hip-hop bands have trouble recreating the magic on record, Lazy Habits actually sound a lot more focussed on record. Whilst their live sound is still developing, their recorded attempts sound really nice. They’ve all been recorded well and there is some great interplay between the brass, keys and guitar. Any percussion kinda gets lost in the mix but the basswork in places is incredible. Title track “Surface Dirt” is a funky nicely layered track and Lazy Habits (the rapper, this time) sounds really tight spitting his street wisdom over a strong beat. There are places where it does feel like the drums are a little tinny and not being attacked properly, but as a first release, it shows a nice work in progress. “Small Screen” features the ever-excellent Compound Profound from The Untold. He destroys the beat and the basswork on this track is the best on the EP. The beginning of it is really melodic and nice. This is a good EP, featuring a hidden track from The Untold and “On My Way”, which will soon become a live anthem, I feel. With its bouncy but lazy trumpet work and complimenting basswork. The rapping is good and is developing as is the drumming. The instrumentation on display is truly excellent. Especially the keyboardist and the bassist. Props have to go to the mixman, because the mix on this is extremely clear and professional sounding. Get this, see them live, they’re coming up, so you better get the party started. © ukhh.com 1999 - 2003 |
