This is the second release from Dominant Third records - the first 12 featured Manchester crew the Microdisiacs who also take vocal duties on two of this EPs five tracks. The first track (Full Force) has the just mentioned Microdisiacs on the vocals. These peoples are new to me having not caught their original 12" wax debut (The Wise/0161 Relief) - and to put it minorly - I'm impressed. Lots of vocalists all with their individual styles but as a collective they are all on point in terms of flow - lyrically theres no fillers as well cos they all got skills to go. The lyrics have punches n' nuff UK references and its good to hear the Manchester accent coming thru - I could spout funny lines all thru this review - but I'm not gonna ruin the fun for you to discover for yourself when you buy this 12". Anyways - this is a battle rhyme cussin off shit rappers - "Your lyrics are like British Rail - never on time". The production is handled by The MagicEye who gives a smooth but relatively heavy break that sits underlain with eastern style string sweeps. Gives the thing a kinda easy going Moroccan feel allowin you to catch the clever lyrics. Nice. Next up we've got Rodney P over a Non-Slick produced track. This track is FAT as FUCK - badness and as the title says "Big Tings". The production is static and spluttered coming on the off beat but retaining a good rhythm which matches the tempo of Rodney P's flow to the maximum - a spine cracker for sure. The 'verse' beat takes the most attention but theres a good bassier 'chorus' change up n' some good sprinkles running the background to keep the most moody head interested. Rodney P comes with the flow we know - bare London styles with ragga-touched lyrics - "Trying to bond with queens and raise kings, no doubt, I describe to the fullest amount, but true nuff gal rush me o we diggin em out". This track is nice beyond nice - "Trying to reap fruit from the seeds we sow, Never modified, Organically we grow". Microdisiacs step up again with a track runnin the self advertisin tip - titled Microdisiacs (yup the chorus runs some M-i-c-r-o-d-i-s-i-a-c-s style!). This track has a nice feel - good layered vocal sound - this is CREW in the truest sense - "I'm on a roll like rizla cigarettes and weed, getting stoned like medieval petty thieves". The beat is produced by Didjit - it bounces well with a bassy rumble meanwhile the beat comes simple n' hits the back of the neck spot. From the lyrics end I'm stayin impressed with the quality maintained throughout "You can stand n' pose in sandals with open toes, but whatever cos we're fatter than the holes in Daniella Westbrooks nose" - complex flows and funny UK oriented punchlines. Pucca. Though after this strong performance I hope they dont ruin everything by turnin out to support' Man U (peace Flat4 you know the score!). RAAAAAAAH - comin next up we have some extra blindingness - a Mark B remix of the Big Tings track mentioned earlier. Normally I'm thinkin hiphop remix's are mostly a load of shit - but this cut is a monster. This track purely emphasises some of Mark B's skills shown earlier in 2000 on the Blade LP - i.e. fat funk. Shit your pants basslines n' a multiplied HUGE sound - properness all over - tasty snares, honking horns, hi-hat jangles - its a killer remix - deadshot. The production doesnt change up - its just a pure heavy roller n' power moves for all four uptempo minutes. This track will be on the soundtrack to the Uk hiphop flick "Rage" (see the old news archive) - and if it dont get the airplay then fuck it - I'm personally hammering some skulls on a stake opposite Tower Bridge myself. Shit - if that wicked Rodney P n' Nextmen track off Raw Materials can get on air - well this track makes that just seem relatively weak, lifeless n' lame - take that as a measure of balance. I dunno - to me the beat just sets of Rodney P's lyrics to maxmium effect - its just tightly matches the tempo of his flow and comes out shining. To top it off you cant front on how ream Mr Thing sounds as he's cuttin the shit out of Dedication n' Blade snippets - the mans gotta have elastic wrists n' a major dose of Parkinsons. Big tings we inna YO! Primecuts best recognise and play this shit on his show. The last track (The Infiltration) takes a smooth sword to matters at hand - personally I'm feeling the beat in a heavy way (constructed by The Magic Eye and Sir Thomas Weller). The vocal comes through well and Hannah T has a sweet sugar voice and doesnt waffle shit like most of them diabetic female frontline vocalists. Pleasant listening and surefire quality is assured with a nice little uplift in the chorus with some deep string sweeps n' the scratchin up of some vocal snips (e.g Lewis Parker, etc). Be warned with this EP Dominant 3rd setting it down HARD second time round. Only play it with a certainty that no youngsters are around - cos if they hear it - your gonna become the pied fucking piper of new uk hiphop converts.... do you know how to change pampers? I best learn with wings cos I cant turn this shit down. Get on it - its a healthy budget burner.
