The I.R.S. L.A.D.S. Anthem EP
The IRS are a five man collective from SE London and they are hedonists to the max. Lead cut on their debut single is “L.A.D.S. Anthem” is about the art of getting smashed, pissed, drunk, stoned, off your face and mashed as well. Eloquent musings on spliff rolling, fast food munching and beer drinking antics by this Big Smoke-based collective. Whilst the subject matter is hardly revolutionary, and not handled in a particularly original way, it still raises a smile to the face. The rappers, whilst not especially amazing, are consistent enough to carry this grimy track through, over the cartoon-ish backing track, which could be the beginning of “Roobarb and Custard.” The 12 also features the more introspective “Keep Focus”, with its earnest pan-pipe/strings melody and trumpet squelch. The rappers deal with more earnest musings of grimy city life here, about how to overcome negativity and keep focus on realising your dreams. Again, whilst not particularly new or different, it works and is listenable, whilst not particularly aw-inspiring. “Work” is the best song on here and is almost playful. It tells a really funny story about a normal day at work, whilst hungover, finding everything go wrong before you. The lyrics take a different stance on the whole “9-5 cat, gotta work for the man” type lyrics by twisting them into a Seinfeld-esque storyline, where even the simplest things manage to go wrong. This release shows some potential from the IRS boys. Some good production and nice rapping, despite the subject matter being tried and tested, they carry even passion and interest to sustain it.
