Cappo The Codex
EP
Cappo and Son Records team up again for this, his 2nd EP. What can I say? Son just keep bringing us the quality. The Looniest kicks off - a wicked track with funny, dirty and some downright nasty lyrics, over some funky beats and nice cuts from Styly Cee. Scor-Zay-Zee joins for a verse and fits in nicely delivering a non-stop verse which as he says is "too fat to fit in your jaws". The EP continues with Caps Internationale, a track with more laid-back beats - vibe samples and a nice bassline. The lyrics aren't any less upfront - bragging rhymes while at the same time crashing down on fake rappers and saying "I'm confused with the status of a rapper now - do I have to be a fake just to happen now?", a question that a lot of people are posing at the moment. For Cappo the answer is "No chance" - unnecessary to say it really - you can tell it just by listening. Side B starts with Gilgamesh. I thought he was a character out of Star Wars or something - shows how much I know! (Educational aside: Gilgamesh was an historical king of Uruk in Babylonia, on the River Euphrates in modern Iraq. He lived about 2700 B.C.). The beats for this track have nice atmospheric strings quite low in the mix, with sparsely-used but powerful bass and a quite basic drum beat. The lyrcs are interesting and take a few listens to begin to understand! I'm not there yet - I don't really get the references to Gilgamesh having not read the epic poem - but I'm beginning to think it's an interesting variation on a bragging theme rather than anything deeper. This is a dead nice track, and like I said, it demands a few listens. 'I Stay The Same' closes the EP. Produced by Lost Island's Styly Cee, it's funkier and bouncier than the previous tracks, a smooth organ sample over a funky drum beat accompany Cappo's Notts flow. On this track he runs down his hiphop life - from writing to rapping to going to jams. The conclusion is summed up in the refrain "The time may have changed but the love stays the same...". A very nice EP then - one to listen to, chuckle to, nod to and whatever else you feel like doing while listening!
