This EP from Cardiff based duo - Jammin n' Blaktrix - comes in 9 tracks deep across 27 minutes of niceness. To me this is the first time I've come across the duo's music so it was a good suprise to check the quality gettin busted on this Cd. To break it down almost track by track in a brief way. First up we get "Interlude" - a extra sleepy n' well constructed downtempo insomniac remover, this really kinda highlights the style of production used - more on this later. The next track I'm gonna mention features Blaktrix - "The First Calling" - from a first impression he's impressive. He comes with good vocal clarity and a rounded voice which holds presence on the m.i.c. - theres a nice variety in rhyming pattern n' proper longness in the spit without becoming breathless. There is some nice strings and relaxed flow on Bastards On My Court" - and this relaxation is wound down to a festering high on "Park Bench" which has haunting effects n' nice vocals. In the EP there is a small role for another new MC to me - Humurak - I wasnt likin his lyrics or flow as much as Blaktrix as he seemed a bit mumbling and speedy shaky on the breathing at times. That said though he had a very small part so I will have to hold judgement until I hear more material from him (he has an EP due on the same label for Spring 2001). The production side of the record is very impressive - there is good diversity and a definite theme of good musicianship throughout. Much of the flavour seems slightly classical with smokey basslines and orchestraldriven hooks fitting over tight minimal breaks. I was feelin the vibe the music created in conjunction with the vocal styles - the favourite touch for me is the use of the clarinet during "The Warlords" cos its just ream and expansively twisted to concrete the atmosphere. A wee note that extra propers must be given for the creative use of track intro sampling. So really Jammin & Blaktrix are settin it off across 9 tracks - this is a fine EP worthy of your time. Blaktrix is an MC I wanna hear more from for definite. The EP is currently available on CD - to grab yourself a copy write a missplelt and grammatically uncorrect thugged out email to Carol Vorderman or Richard Whiteley at: MErecordings@aol.com.
