Dr Krome & Gee Swift Expressive EP
For those people who wondered whatever happened to Beatroute 38 it may be interesting to know that two former members are back in the form of Dr. Krome & Gee Swift. Releasing the ‘Expressive’ EP is their first offering, and at 10 tracks long (a new world record for an EP?) it would appear they’ve had a body of material building up. So thank god then for Rola’s Ruztik imprint, who’ve finally got this material on the streets.
Laid back in the most part, yet still funky enough to get you moving, ‘Expressive’ serves up plenty of treats. ‘Back On The Scene’ is one of these, a real funky piece, with Gee Swift finding a nice plucky funk ge-tar sample and a sprinkling of keys to make you nod. Throw in some southwest style vocals from Rola, Gee Swift & Truck and wicked cuts by Dr. Krome and you’ve got some proper shit. This no-frills winning formula is used throughout the EP and tracks like ‘Dead Or Alive’, ‘MC’ & ‘For The Pleasure’ hit the spot.
There is nothing overly fancy or progressive about the sound on this EP, so it may go under the radar of some, but if your Spank Rock CD is rotting your brain and you’re after some vintage southwest hiphop a la Numskullz & Beatroute 38, then look no further than Dr. Krome & Gee Swift.
