Rek Records Presents …A Taste Of Things To Come EP

This right here is the debt from the Rek Records stable, playing host to artists from the steel city and its surrounding hamlets. It comes to you in the form of eight tracks, spanning a huge range of hiphop styles. Some of these styles come off well, others frankly don't.

Side A is without a doubt the more solid, consistent side. Multiverse 3 hit hard with 'Here Comes The Multiverse 3', strong beat with great head nodding properties goes down well here. Lyricists aren't bad either, their flows do sound somewhat simple however. Other standouts on this side include Octopus Rhyme's highly insane yet entertaining 'Global Warning'. A beat that sounds like its been sent from the dark side with love from Darth Vader, laced with an original flow, top. K.N.S get the best beat of the A-side award with '3rd Degree', fresh like Walkers foil packaging. The rhymes are solid, yet again though, the flows seem somewhat dated. The final track, by Clinical Daz is so bad I've listened to it once, I pray every night that I'll never hear it again, wank in a cup basically.

Side B really doesn't have much to shout about. The other Multiverse 3 track, 'Bazza', isn't as good as their first effort, with its plodding beat and simple flows showing up really badly. Noz 'n'Toddlatee serve up some freshness in moderation with '**** With This'. Love the break used, very nice indeed, and Noz's lyrics are well written. However it just seems to lack that spark that transforms it from a moderate track to a quality track. The last two tracks, by Green Knights and the other by Red Eye Knights are both highly dull to listen too, thus I don't bother.

In summery, this EP does have some tracks that are worth an ear-wigging. Its just it lacks consistency throughout, and some of the tracks shouldn't have made it to the final cut. I expect Rek Records will improve their releases over time as their experience increases, so keep an eye out, but at the moment approach this release with some caution..
