 Kung Fu Underworld, London

As KUNG-FU enters into the tail end of 2003, it seems the monthly night is now not enough for the dedicated London heads who trek there. On a regular basis, KUNG FU, arguably the most important hip-hop night in London gets absolutely rammed.

Last Tuesday was no exception.

OK sure, Roots Manuva was there, but still, the buzz of the place was like nothing I’ve seen there before. Long before he came on stage, love was being spread like a grenade full of Viagra by the dextrous skills of Harry & Sarah Love, two of KUNG-FU’s resident dj’s. They were rocking the crowd, and inspiring the Breakers to get their ish on with a shit-load of classics. After people had got their swerve on fo’ a bit, came the open mic spot, which, as always gave a little edge to things, stirring up a little passion in the crowd, and prying some of the Bar-fly’s away from their spot at the bar. Mystro hosted both the night & open mic, and had to prize the mic away from one-or-two over eager peeps.

Next came the feature part of the evening. MK came on, and boy, he ripped it. Getting everyone, and I mean everyone crazy –hyped. This was in aid of his new mix-tape ‘London Underground Part 2’, and he provided a phat insight into what’s on this offering from the mix-tape king himself. Once more he got the massive crowd jumping, with a selection of UK classics, and nasty cuts. By now I was beginning to feel a little mashed (who wasn’t?), but not so much make me miss Roots.

He came on, and was like he said, “Drunk as fuck.” The KUNG-FU boy’s clearly dishin’ out plenty of free booze to their men, which is always nice to see. Hospitality is a wonderful thing. Especially when you get to take advantage of it….Roots rocked the spot for the best part of an hour, with a top set worth waiting up for, and worth being tired/hung-over as fuck at work for.
