 Blaktrix @ The Toucan, Cardiff

After two really great, packed out Higher Learning nights, I was slightly concerned that Cardiff wouldn’t come and show respect to one of its greater assets. Lucky for me, I was proved wrong and from the moment I entered the Toucan club it was clear there were plenty of people lending support to Blaktrix for the launch of his E.P.

After a healthy warm-up from the deejays on rotation, Creative Control stepped up to get the crowd going for the main event. Although it’s a name I’d heard of before, having not heard much material from these Swindon boys, I was more than pleasantly surprised. Their brand of hiphop, somewhere between party, old skool and sage francis, went down a treat on a wet night in Cardiff. It’s a shame people were paying more attention to the bboys who were dancing at the time, because if people had cared to listen, they’d have been treated. Still, me, along with a handful of others were lapping it up.

After a brief interlude which included a slightly weak open mic, Blaktrix stepped on stage. I was surprised at the lack of reaction from the crowd at this point, but thankfully the main man wasn’t about to launch his E.P. without a fight. Blaktrix quickly got the crowd bopping with a few tracks of his new E.P., with some of the more ‘on-the-pulse’ heads filling in lines when Blaktrix called upon it. It wasn’t long before the Toucan was filled with the track ‘How Do You Do Yours’ from the Secondson L.P., which went down a treat with everyone in the building. Humurak then steps up on stage for a track called ‘Your Loss’, which is about splitting up with your girlfriend… slap stick lyrics with the two emcees having enough energy to power a small town, great stuff! The final track performed was ‘Ronin’ from the new E.P. Stirring and emotional, it was a great way to finish the set.

Once again a great night at the Toucan and based on the crowd reaction, some healthy sales figures for Blaktrix on his new E.P.
