Krs One, Braintax & Mystro The Event, Brighton
Krs-One hadn’t toured the UK for getting on a decade, so for him to be playing over here was a big deal. Plus with home grown supporting acts of Braintax, Mystro & Son of Sam the night was gonna be off the hook.
Braintax & Mystro took to the stage together, performing a medley of tracks from both of their albums, including cobblestones, biro funk, free the walls and don’t drag me in. Despite some mic difficulties early on they performed a tight set, as was to be expected from them. Krs was held up on the way to the club so Brain & Mystro had an extended set and still left the crowd wanting more.
The stage was left empty for a couple of minutes until the host appeared apologising for the delay and announced that Skinnyman was in the building, and not just in the building, in the crowd! He stepped to the mic and offered up some fresh new accapella tracks along with some from Council Estate of Mind. Needless to say, he went down well with the crowd.
I think its gonna be difficult to put into words how mental everyone went when Krs took to the stage. Especially when he performed classics like Sound of da police and step into a world. There was actually a mosh pit formed that looked more like something from a gig with a headliner named ‘Kill your parents’! I have never seen any hip hop event like it. I decided to keep me and my camera safe, I would move up onto the side of the stage against the railings. Unfortunately some fools decided to start throwing around glass bottles, and after one smashed over the head of the girl next to me, I decided that the photos weren’t worth an unnecessary trip to casualty and moved to a more conservative position!
Krs One was incredible and it was one of the best hip hop nights I’ve been to. It was a shame that a small few, that probably as Braintax says ‘think Trevor Nelsons the fresh shit’ decided they wanted some attention. I can only hope the bouncers gave them a good kicking. If it wasn’t for them Krs would have played a much longer set, but he was forced to cut it short.
Overall, a dope night with something for every hip hop head. A fusion of UK and American hip hop. Krs One is a true legend and hopefully one day the UK guys will get the same recognition.
Big up to Jamie @ Def Ethics for sorting the night, for securing other legendary hip hoppers including Grand Wizard Theodore and The Sugar Hill Gang and bringing them to Brighton.

one of the best hip hop nights I’ve been to
