Various Artists The Deadly 7" Sins LP

Surely the title should be 'the 7" deadly sins'? oh well...

Following 7 superb 7"s the debut CD from the Breakin Bread stable is here. 22 tracks, 9 of which were on the 7"s, clocking in at 70 minutes. If you've been to the club, heard the radio show or bought any of the 7s then you already know where they're coming from - funk and hiphop - funky hiphop! The element that was missing from the 7" series, namely MCs, is catered for here with a number of skits from open mic sessions at the club night and a few of the new tracks. It's a very listenable experience, the change in styles between tracks refreshes rather than hinders and the familiarity of the tracks from the 45s breaks up the listening of the new cuts. I do have a dislike for the open mic recordings though (from Kashmere, Kope, AM, Mystro and TMO). I can see where they're coming from, bringing that live element of the club night but a freestyle isn't the best way for an MC to promote himself on a recorded format, the sound levels are quite high compared to the rest and the recording quality obviously not up to the studio sounds of the rest of the album. The new MC-led tracks are all excellent - Cappo & DPF (from Def Tex) on Rob Life's 'focus on the main features', the weed anthem (another one?) 'Green Fingers' by Tom Caruana featuring (sounds like Karl Hinds to me) Ahmos and a Rob Life mix (incorporating a very recognisable loop) of Beats In Progress's 'Ill Grammar' featuring Chrome, TMO and Mad Flow, the original released on Tufkuts label a year or so ago. The new tracks on the funk side of things will have you clamouring for more 7"s so you can spin them...Color Climax excllent 'Jellyfish Popcorn' (obviously a nod to Malcolm Catto) deserves to be on its own piece of wax cos it's so damn funky. If you read the interview I did with the BB crew and you were interested in the Disorda falling asleep on tubes story then the full ansaphone message is reproduced to close off the album...we just want to know what he's playing at falling asleep on tubes at 9.30 in the evening!

Overall this is a top album with something for everyone. If you've had experience of anything breakin bread before then you'll know this compilation will be class and it's worth getting even if you've got the 7"s. Everyone else shouldn't even hesitate and should buy on sight...
