 Buck65 Square LP

This LP was a real suprise to me - I actually enjoyed something recommended to me by Sumo! The record itself has a strange format in that its broken down into four segments of around fifteen minutes each. Whilst this makes writing a review a difficult task it also makes for a good listen - basically it forces you to follow the sonic path chosen for you - its amazing what you'll listen through when the ability to track skip is removed. There are seperate tracks within each segment but these are seamlessly mixed together with additional music - which compliment the vocal sections to form complete movements.

I'm not going to comment upon my personal favourite sections of the different movements - this would be too difficult cos theres no track names or idents. Basically the LP drifts with some extremely musical hiphop production - through the very emotive use of both digital and organic sounds Buck65 creates beats of real depth and character. On my first listens I only got to grips with the immediate elements of his breaks - it was only later I appreciated the more subtle arrangements that were underpinning each section. The production on this record really hits the spot and carries you through the sixty minutes without boring the mind - challenging but still aurally enjoyable - which is an extremely difficult balance to achieve. At times its very reminsinct of early Mo'Wax DJ Krush, Shadow, etc.

Buck65 has a very distinctive poetic delivery - I was mad suprised when he started chatting in his unhurried, low-key, clear voice. The lyrics dont rhyme for rhyming's sake - with other acts this can lead to a lack of flow - but with the spoken word delivery it works well and suits the mood of the music. Slightly tangled and claustrophobic lyrics lead to a real atmosphere of a man working his way out through his music.

Overall, a strange album with some unique twists. The production is solidly based in hiphop land but the lyrical elements are more spoken word/poetic than your usual hiphop record. The LP wont be everyones cup of char but it suprised me enough to get regular rotation. Time to get on the web and check this geezers back catalogue.
