Various Artists Low Life's Main Courses Food LP

Intending to carry on the winning streak that started in 2002 with the release of Braintax's 'Biro Funk' and Jehst's 'Return of The Drifter' EP, Mr Christie has lined up quite a treat for us. 'Food' weighs in at 14 tracks featuring old hands like Rodney P running with newer heads such as The Iguana Man and you definitely get the feeling that all the artists involved with the project feel they have something to prove. First out of the gate is the posse cut "You Know Who You Are" featuring Rodney P, Farma G, Mystro, Braintax and each of the MC's nail their 16 bars with the conviction heads have come to expect from them. Mystro and C-Swing show good chemistry on "My Type of Party", with the only Low - Lifer to have had a top ten hit (FACT!) providing a mid-tempo backdrop for Mysdiggi's witty lyrics and charismatic delivery as he describes his ideal knees up (Complete with "babysitters for the babymothers who bought babies" and twin strip bars "One for men and one for ladies"). The lead single, 'Showbitchness' by Low Life newcomer Verb T and Harry Love manages to rail against the boujie inhabitants of this planet while remaining easy on the ear. On 'Adventures in New Bohemia' Jehst continues his quest to become the poster boy for all 20-somethings who have an aversion to sponges and washing up liquid, while Mikey D.O.N of Krispy and Benny Live O come to the table with 'Tell Them !' a two step offering, which these ears took a little while to warm to. Ricochet of Universal Soldiers, paints a vivid picture on 'Mad Runningz' of the hassles that come with trying to juggle a demanding woman and hustling herb while introducing us to some proper shady types along the way. 'The Wickerman Theory' by Chester P is simply more of what we have come to expect from the corner of Highbury Estate, intricate and thoughtful beats coupled with lyrics so deep you could get lost in them, and The Iguana Man goes for his like a seasoned veteran despite his rookie status, stamping his personality all over 'Next Level Response's laidback beat. Bearing in mind that Rodney P has his first album in a decade dropping in the coming months you could forgive him for saving all the real heat for his own LP, but 'Run That' lacks the spark that made tracks like 'Dedicated' and 'Big Tings We Inna' classics. My advice is look forward to 'The Future'. Farma G's second appearence comes on 'Between the Lines', and the elder McBain brother drops heavy on a melancholy piano loop while Braintax takes the inflated egos of the music industry to task on 'Gulliver'. The Low Life head honcho leads by example but the compilation's stand out track has to be 'City Sickness', produced by Jehst and featuring Usmaan and Asaviour. Over a driving beat the YNR boys describe life in the inner city, and the trio's voices all complement each other well.On 'Rockstars' Taskforce, who still have their sarky hats on after 'Fugs 'R' Us' team up with Braintax to poke fun at the Pop Idols of this world (see Braintax's "Got a remix out with Kylie now/ Will Young did a version but we beat him down" for proof).

In all this is a solid album with one of Britain's most prolific hip-hop labels. All the material stands up well enough to stand out on a daytime radio show, it's just a shame that music with so much character may never get to reach the ears of the masses...
