Various Good Times with Joey and Norman Jay LP

This compilation basically grabs tracks which have blown up the Good Times soundsystem over its years as one of the most major soundsystems to be regularly involved in the Notting Hill Carnival. And in that sense its a very broad collection - spanning hiphop, soul, funk, and housey dance (yuk). In one way it does try to cover all bases and as I heard recently - if you spread butter to thinly it can taste like margerine. This is a bit true for this VERY expensive compilation which covers 5 platters - although some of the pressings are a bit suss. It comes with a nice colour booklet filled with slightly arse licking biography of the soundsystem and the brothers known as Jay - but I suppose there is no doubt that their legends in their field and rightly deserve such praise for their soundsystem from such a diverse range of people who've raved to their sounds. I personally wanted this compliation for Merlena Shaws - California Soul as I'm feeling that track like a bad case of ring burning runs - yup its HOT SHIT. Anyhow other good tracks worthy of note are Ali Baba by John Holt, Joyous by Pleasure and Funky Nassau by Ray Munnings. Also included is some token hiphop which you might well own already and if you dont then dont go looking for it here get the original recordings for KRS's Sound of da Police and PE's Rebel without a Pause. A mention must go to Byron Lee and the Dragonaires for their steelpan version of Mission Impossible cos its just blinding. Overall - an Ok compilation. I bought it for a specific reason.... I think you should make sure you want one of the tracks before purchasing as theres loads of fillers on here.
