 Yungun The ESSAnce LP

This release from Yungun brings all you CD-buyers up to date with his previous releases, as well as giving some new tunes, a taster of things to come when his debut album drops soon. This “albu-lation” (it’s not an album and it’s not a compilation) gives us some great songs produced by Ben Grymm, Mr Thing and Harry Love, as well as the super duper-dope Lewis Parker-produced “The Big Idea.” What this album demonstrates is that Yungun is a man with a lot of personality and he is a man with many strings to his bow too. His desire to be an all-rounder sees him flipping between mindless party anthems like “Dancing Shoes”, battle arena lyrics, helped by Kyza in “Spit Fire” and sombre, reflective love in the gorgeously wistful “Liquid Love.” He can sing and even raps in fluent flawless Spanish on “Lingo Gringo.” The beats on this album are mostly strong bass-driven party loops as well as softer more acoustic beats. The production is solid and Yungun brings something new to each tune. He has an extremely clear diction and his delivery is both smooth and hard. He sounds extremely passionate and believes every word he utters. This can only be a skill brought around by years of cyphers and open mics. Highlight on this albu-lation is the smooth bass-driven “Big Idea” produced by Lewis Parker. His flipping between rap and song is seamless and the rhythms are gorgeous. It shows off Parker’s skills as a producer too. There is a definite sense of Yungun having an ear for a beat, be it standard fare or something a little different, like the slower reflective “Liquid Love.” His desire to work with a handful of producers, who can bring out the best in him, also demonstrate a consistency and maturity that most UK spit-happy Mcs lack.

The skills on display here should be the standard for any up-and-coming UK MC’s. Whilst you feel Yungun still has a lot more to bring to the table, his skills as they stand are unsurpassable. He doesn’t skip a beat and his consistency, humility and sheer dominance on the mic set up big tings fi gwarn in the future.
