 Various Funk Spectrum series LP

Funk spectrum is a really nice compilation of obscure break filled tracks. The first was compiled by Josh Davis (aka DJ Shadow) and Keb Darge (a big deep funk 7" trader from London) - the second by Kenny Dope and Kep Darge - across both parts of this series it crosses with many different types of flavour. The first part doesnt include the artist name (thats the reason why Josh Davis said he would do it) and therefore stays true to the old principles of beat digging - you gotta do a bit of research in order to gain the hunger in your belly to go try and catch one of these original pressings! It is still made relatively easy - you've just got to read the sleeve notes, e.g to find out the tastiness shown on The Road was laid down originally by The Communicators and Black Experience Band - so there I know and off I go- errrm I think anyhow... let me check that.

Anyways onto the music - each guest compiler takes two sides (about ten tracks) of one platter and Keb Darge takes the other plate in both of the compilations. Obviously the styles vary according to the person choosing the tracks but both Spectrum 1 and 2 come with some serious wicked music. Davis's selections are really eclectic for example Getting down for Xmas - an instrumental of an elf fairy tale in a christmas stylee. All of it works and you know for a man of such research calibre (just check the Brainfreeze mix nahmean) there are plenty of mighty gems to listen through on his side - just check - Lets do it today (procrastination) - for the deepest blinding cut. Kenny Dope goes a bit for the jugular with a healthy splattering of fat breaks and tasty vocals - to have these in your box as originals would definitely mean you could rock any jam anywhere in the world - and he maintains the quality of the compilation series for sure. On both of his selections Darge takes a slightly more soulful slant and makes his selection more coherent and progressive in terms of the chronology of a sound styles evolution - so this including some modern edits of classic tracks done by Ian Wright (a legendary Northern Soul collector and pretty ace remixer/reworker). Overall - a high quality series to match the other funk compilations which come out on BBE - such as the deep funk series compiled completely by Keb Darge. Full quality over all 8 sides and total fresh in terms of quantity (40 tracks) - you wont be let down if you invest some farthings into these two collections - they'll give your stylus a workout on the rewind for definite.
