Various Downlow - The Hip Hop Underground LP

This is an OK compilation in an overall way - but in a specific way it is the absolute fucking bollox. There are tracks on here which are just devastating to your ear - and if you haven't heard some of the British tracks on here then you have a better chance of finding this compilation than you do of diggin' the original 12's (their long gone n' safely tucked in somebody's steel caged, reinforced locked n' padded crate - treat with respect innit). Classic british tracks include (my most standout trackever!) Blak Twangs Real Estate, Lewis Parker blabbling nicely about the Mysteries of Life n' some dapper laid back bizness from Mr Rootsical Manuva who comes with the Next Type Of Motion (a track taken elsewhere on Brand New Second Hand). The ten track compilation is split over double wax and divided roughly equally between US and UK emcees. Although with such heavy UK talent on show it pales the US tracks to look a bit worse than how they really are - for example East Flatbush Project (Tried by 12) or a J-Live track (Braggin' Writes)... both of which are strong. Unfortunately - and maybe again it is the surrounding tunes but for me the weakest tracks are undeniably Prince Paul's You Made Me n' Al Tariq (Do Yo Thang). Overall a strongly recommended compilation which highlights some rare old tracks which fully represent the UK sound of then and now. Definitely buy this LP if you don't have or have never heard some of the tracks mentioned (e.g Real Estate) cos it is the full-on monty with two toast n' triple tomato. Safe...
